I have a table reserved and plan to bring a bunch of frags but was wondering what if someone had only one or two frags to trade, say someone new to the hobby; they still need to "rent" a table?

you could trade with a couple if ya wanted, the whole thing of getting a table is in order to have a tank set up in order for people to see your corals you are trading

I have a ??? How will everyone's table look...will you all have a tank, light and circulation to let the frags open, like at TMAC?... or will you just have a photo of the frag and have it already bagged....How many frags will you all have? I don't want to show up with like, 10 or so frags and have someone like Zoanuts sitting next to me!!!

Last year it was very individualized. Some people had everything bagged ahead of time, others had a small display tank. No systems like at TMAC though... but really good corals.

Last year someone had printed pictures of what each type looked like open, then had a few of each bagged and labeled with prices. Very helpful for the buyer.

Transport in a small ice chest for temp control. One item per bag reduces stress.
Some people posted pictures ahead of time and had items pre-sold for pick-up at the swap.
For best results, frag ahead of time so they have time to heal.
Keep it simple.

It is a swap...i.e. frags, fish, equipment....swap, as in trades or cash

i would suggest starting a 'hilltopperpete's frag swap preview' in the for sale forum so that members can see what you got and offer a trade or cash. if only so that you can try and get a deal done before the swap. just makes it easier for all involved.

Bill S

I'm sure to get some flack for this post - but I'm used to it.

It seems to me, that in reviewing some of the "preview" threads, and viewing photos posted elsewhere, that the spirit of a "frag swap" may have gone by the wayside, for some folks.

I may be getting this wrong, but it APPEARS that maybe some folks are looking at this as a money-making venture, and that MAYBE some folks have purchased corals elsewhere, with the intention of making money at the fragswap.

I've always thought "Frag Swaps" are supposed to be just that - frags that folks have grown out from their stock, and then want to swap or maybe sell, to populate their tank with a more diverse selection of corals, in an inexpensive manner. You know: take some frags from your tank, bag 'em up, and bring them to trade, get some good ones in trade. For those just starting out, a way to get some inexpensive frags.

Now, to those that posted previews, or those going to be selling quanties of frags actually grew them out from their own stock, I apologize if I offended you. But, remember, those that purchased corals to frag and sell will be, IN MY OPINION, unfairly competing with your ability to find takers for your frags...

Like I said, I think it's important that the spirit of a "swap" is kept intact.

Texreefer
Tue, 16th Jun 2009, 09:04 PM
Ding! Ding! Ding!.. Bill, the only people that will have a problem with your post are the people that spent big money on colonies to frag up and sell for a profit. as always in swaps.. buyer beware!

JimD
Tue, 16th Jun 2009, 09:56 PM
My interpretation of a frag swap is a bunch of friends getting together and maybe meet some new people with similar interests. Possibly trading or purchasing stuff of interest. Every club, at least the ones Ive seen, have frag 'swaps', I wonder if they would agree.. Edit: Plus, its my item, I can do what I want with it, you have the option to not buy it for whatever reason...

Bill S
Tue, 16th Jun 2009, 10:16 PM
Wow. What's really funny here, is that I've gotten quite a few PMs, emails, phone calls, etc. about my post. Including some interesting reactions from MAAST sponsors. ALL, so far, in support of my post.

The line between "sponsors" and folks looking to make a little cash looks like it's getting a bit blurry on MAAST.

All in all, it seems pretty universal, that the spirit of a "frag swap" is at risk here...

Three weeks ago my wife and some other members that are tired of finding the same usual Zoanthids for sale spent over 14 hours driving though different cities buying hard to find expensive Zoanthids and racked up a bill of almost a thousand dollars in just one day and are selling frags to recover the time and money they spent getting these hard to find corals, but how dare they offer Maast members hard to find corals at a decent price, they should have never offered such corals for sale.

The worst part about all this is that the majority of the people here on Maast that have bought expensive corals have done and continue to do exactly the same and I've bought and will continue to buy from these people because I cannot get that coral for a better price and they are the one's taking the risk of loosing an entire colony and ending up with nothing, but now some people are getting upset about it.

What's unfair about it? Is it that they spent a great amount of money and time to buy some nice hard to find corals and took the risk of loosing these expensive colonies and somebody else doesn't want to take that risk

San Antonio has been getting better corals but still doesn't have the nice corals that most of us would like to have. In the few months that my wife has had her 265 gallon tank she's bought thousands of dollars in corals and has sold nothing close to what she's spent, but she would like it if the hobby could help pay for new frags and I don't see anything wrong with that.

As far us supporting our sponsors my wife does a darn good job at spending money with them and last time I checked none of them had these corals.

!!!! Buyer beware you may get a good deal on some nice corals.

yeppers...with steve being one of the most reliabe people i know-the early birds will be taken care of. and i will be there as early as i can. i know i am always late, but i am getting better. i would suggest that any members looking to setup lights with the tables bring a heavy duty extension cord just in case you are not set up right at a plug.

as for the concern over the 'swap'. bill i think you make a valid point the swap is taking on a 'group sell' kind of form. but we just need to make sure everyone knows that there will be trading at the swap. members are encouraged to bring what they can and be ready to trade with members. i know i will.

in fact i am starting a thread in the sale/trade forum specifically for members to post items that they will like to 'trade' so that others can get an idea of what is available.

So I've got about 4 frags of Krypto Candy Cane (2-4 heads each), could frag some really long GSP (tendrils about 1" long from the head), and an enormous torch coral that has about 15 heads (could frag about 7-8). I wont be able to make it to the Frag swap but will be passing through SA on Sunday if anyone has any leftovers they would be willing to sell. I am mostly looking for Zoo's/Paly's and maybe some Sun coral or Duncans. If you've got anything(even if its not something from my list) left give me a call after the swap and we can meet somewhere. My number is 641-750-0937. Thanks and I wish everyone happy buying/selling!

I figure the candy canes around $5 per small head, $7 per large. I have frags with as few as 2 heads and as many as 4. I'm really looking for softies and LPS, SPS just don't seem happy in my tank.

I also have a 6" piece of purple cap (mostly orange) that isn't happy in my tank. I'd be more than happy to trade some or all of it.

I'm be at least one of the bald white guys. I didn't get in on a table, but don't have many frags to bring so everything should work out.

I look like this [http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Rml_bE8J3vw/SdAnY2dQaoI/AAAAAAAAANM/qiYmGqXkGfQ/s1600-h/sm_Sydney+2009+159.JPG] (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Rml_bE8J3vw/SdAnY2dQaoI/AAAAAAAAANM/qiYmGqXkGfQ/s1600-h/sm_Sydney+2009+159.JPG%5D) :)

Considering the average age of a MAAST member is probably 30+ saying you will be one of the bald guys is like saying: look for the guy wearing a facemask on a football field. ;-)

<---Not bald yet, but getting there.

Thanks to the Members for a great turnout. I hope that everyone had enough to eat. That was the biggest group of MAAST Members I have ever seen. I would also like to extend appreciation to Jose' and Steve for cooking delicious Fajitas, and the BOD for their help in the success of the Frag Swap. I know there were a lot of awesome frags purchased and traded, hopefully we'll see pictures in the Photography Forum.

Wow, I had a great time everyone and got some great frags. My husband (who is not involved in the hobby) just stood back and watched the money fly!! :blushing: I got a lot of nice zoos, a beautiful purple mushroom, 2 big candycane frags that had amazing colour, and a sweet little BTA...which I promptly droped on the floor while transfering to my tank but it looks to be fine and is slowly crawling around my tank right now. I had reserved the candycanes from VWMike and while waiting for him to get there my husband asked "have you actually met him before" to which I answered "no". My husband then asked how I planned on knowing him, to which I answered "he said that he was a bald white guy!!" My husband took one look around and busted out laughing ...there must have been 10 in that room today!! We actually had no problem finding each other and all went well. Thanks to all that made the frag swap possible....great job!!

I would first like to say thanks to Jose for the help cooking. Man we made some really sweet fajitas. Thanks to all that helped. This was an amazing turn-out. It was great to see some many members there. I believe there as about 100+ there and next year we will consider having both rooms.

Thanks to the Members...for making this possible.
