The Toxicity of Some Freshly Mixed Artificial Sea Water: A Bad Beginning For A Reef Aquarium by Ron Shimek

http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-03/rs/feature/index.php

Do you think this article is as true today as it was in 2003?

It makes me rethink my salt choice!

Warning: heavy reading.

Ah, a classic.

Some would say this has been debunked somewhat and the original article is suspect.

I would take much of it with a grain of salt...

Could you guide me to the article debunking it? I would be interested in reading more.

Well, I looked for an axe-grinding smiley, that I can't find. Can someone please make one?

I'm a biologist by education. I took a quick look at this. Seriously. How about some good science? i get so tired of "science" with a pre-conceived conclusion. All we need now is a "sunscreen is killing the reefs!" discussion.

LOL @ Shimek. After a quick read, I see that he gets bashed to bits. I guess his study wasn't as scientific as it should have been.

I've read these salt studies. Good stuff.

On a side note...
I was wondering how could Shimek's findings basically bash IO salt and praise another. The urchin study felt like an advertisement almost.

Thanks for the laughs before bed!

Yeah. I'd like to see a copy of the actual lab book with real data rather than then the "This is it."

Are you thinking about raising urchins? I have read a few comparisons on synthetic vs. natural SW in terms of chemical composition, but where is the comparison in terms of coral growth/coloring matched to the individual composition of each salt choice. Corals and inverts grow much larger in their natural habitat, I haven't seen where NSW in your aquarium produces the same results.

I wasn't thinking about raising urchins. It was just a, generally speaking, type of comment. I was wondering why in Shimek's results IO was not able to support the urchin embryos as well as the other salts. According to WWW and others, there is information missing from the urchin study making it questionable.

Dr. Shimek is not a reliable sole source for information. Many of his opinions have been presented as facts or laws in his published works. Too many of his ideas have been successfully challenged through the years. "Questionable" is the term I use whenever he is the author.

Same as any "Scientific" study, depends on who's paying the bill.
