View Full Version : START 210 GAL. BUILD THREAD

RICKY81

ok let me try this out.... i have seen many people make threads about there tank builds and well i decided, why not give it a try with mine....

so before anything, i should start with the basics first. I have had my 75gal for the past 10yrs (about 8yrs tropical) then upgraded to a 75gal mixed reef that i had for about 1.9 yrs old to what is now a new upgrade 210gal RR tank in process. i bought my tank 210gal (used) back in October 2008 from Jacob ( i decided well its a good time to upgrade so i got it as a birthday present and an early christmas gift from me to me)

the tank came with pretty much everything , pc lights, 35- 40 gal sump, Octopus skimmer, stand, bucket of salt, heater, other miscellaneous etc.., almost ready to just set up and go but i decided that i wanted to wait and get better lights, a custom made stand, sand, and more live rock.

since all this with the economy started, my income was slightly affected and was in a tighter budget (NO OVERTIME :bareteeth:) so had to take it easy for a few months buying things slowly.

finally after 7 months of just sitting in the garage i have finally made it to the stage of plumbing, moving it into the living room area and is currently cycling for the past week... (thanks to INCOME TAX :applause:)

i used the water in my previous 75gal, live rock and about 2 gallons of dirty gravel to seed the tank along with 220lbs of Live sand with bacteria...

**i want to share my progress but i need help with how to post pictures that show as part of the thread and not the ones that you have to click on the link to redirect you to another website.**

Sounds like fun, setting up the tank is one of the funnest parts. Just plan out everything before you do it.

ok let me try this.... this is a picture of my 210gal tank with the old stand when i initially bought it. Tank measures (72Lx24Dx29T)

setting up the rock work.... had to thrown in a bag of sand 20lbs prior to working on it to prevent any rocks from falling and breaking the bottom glass..
http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/qq299/RICK81_bucket/210GAL%20TANK%20BUILD/AQUARIUMPICTURES003.jpg

i wanted to make a cave in the center of the tank with the rock work and decided to steal this idea from JeffCo. Grabbed a milk crate at a gas station and cut all four sides and left the bottom intacted... i then burned the sharp edges with a lighter to make them more round. notice that there are some rocks infront of the milk crate around it.. you can see the orange color of the fiberglass rods used to hold the rock against the milk crate... i used a drill to make a hole and inserted the rod through it and used epoxy putting through the inside and outside to hold the rod and rock in place later i can just cover the orange part with more epoxy putting and let the coraline algae take over it..

http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/qq299/RICK81_bucket/210GAL%20TANK%20BUILD/AQUARIUMPICTURES006.jpg

and after about 2 hrs of working on the landscape, this was the final product..230 lbs of Live Rock, 240lbs of live sand.... i used epoxy putting and fiber glass rods to hold some rocks in place...this picture was actually taken the in the morning about 4 hrs after cycling the water...
http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/qq299/RICK81_bucket/210GAL%20TANK%20BUILD/AQUARIUMPICTURES009.jpg

under the tank just getting started....althought all the plumbing was pre-planned, cut and placed together in the garage all i need to do is just glue the parts with pvc cement..
http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/qq299/RICK81_bucket/210GAL%20TANK%20BUILD/AQUARIUMPICTURES001.jpg

about 4 more days later this picture was taken to allow some time to fill up a 42gal rubbermaid trash can due to the RO unit that i have only makes 10gal/day. and started the pump.... the left section is the drain section. has 2- 1 inch drains and 2- 3/4 returns. with skimmer compartment, then bubble trap, and return section, hooked up to a Barracuda water pump where it then splits up to 5 outputs and idea given to me by (BIGBIRD123), then goes up on 2 - 3/4inch return lines (to each corner in the back) and also to a 1" Sea Swirl and have the other outlet setup for the other 1" Sea Swirl that i'm pending to buy (low on cash) and have 1 output closed with a plug just in case i come up with another device that i will be using. i have also placed many unions to all my lines for easy quick disconnects....on the far left hand side you can see a ball valve with no pvc that is actually and in place to facilitate with water draining it out for water changes.... all i have to do is hook up the pvc and open the valve and water should drain...

Looks great. Nice idea adding the rods to the crate. I always had trouble with my rocks falling off.
That drain line makes it so easy for water changes. Where are you going to drain it too?

i have a pvc pipe already measured and Cut and i just have to insert it and it will drain to the outside front of the stand into a rubbermaid 18gal tote..... this is a side view of the drained pipe.

one of my concerns is that my overflow is making a lot of noice (water falling into the overflow) and was curious as to what is the difference in the drain wether you move it up or down and what the little nipple is for (on the top right) and does it have anything to do with the noise.

Nice setup! cant wait to see the progress. the nipple is to prevent the drain from siphoning when the pumps are off. in other words, if it werent on there and you shut off your return pump it would continue to suck water untill the water level was lower than the drain itself. i hope im making sense. its a little early and i had a late night, theres probably also a small hole on the top of your return line if you look for it. it does the same thing. as far as the noise mine are pretty queit and i also am running a dual overflow setup such as you. hope i helped

this is what the pump looks like with the outputs that i made, they are 2 - 1 inch outputs for 2-1inch Sea Swirls, and 2- 3/4 outputs for the Return lines, and the last on the far right is sealed with a drain plug for any possible additions..... pump is a Barracuda

Ricky,

Your plumbing looks great. Just a tip for the future: Every once in a while, plumbing leaks, or valves break. With your manifold beast, if you have one single leak, you'll have to replace your entire manifold. I try to leave enough PVC pipe between connections so that in a pinch, I can repair it.

Also, since you are hard plumbing everything, you MAY get some noise from your pump that vibrates your plumbing. If so, use a rubber coupling (HD or Lowes) to isolate the pump.

what do you mean by the manifold beast??

actually my plumbing doesn't vibrate or makes noise..it is only the pump that makes noise. Initially when i installed it it was louder and now that it has been running for almost 3 weeks now the noise has diminished (or maybe i just got use to it)

yeah it sure is. i currently have 4 damsels in there and you still can't see them..... i'm excited now cause i just checked my levels about 4 days ago and the nitrates were at around .20 and 2days ago they were less than .10 so maybe today..... it will all be good and transfer some fish over...:applause:

On a side note... I'd drop the damsels-- they get mean as sin when they start to grow. If I had to keep a fish that was mean as sin, I'd want it to be a little cooler than a damsel. If they play nice, awesome!

If it's under warranty, I think is at least 1 year, they will fix it for free. They can either send you the parts or you can ship it back to them to fix.

well kind of weird but last night that i was messing with the Sea Swirl the adapter elbow that goes on the outflow fell down to the back and basically all water was flowing downward and blowing all the sand away...... well this happend,,, i placed it back,,, then few minutes later i realized that it was working again.... but i don't know that is just to iffy... might get it replaced.

alright this is a picture of my light rack that i did for my 36inch. T5's, they are a total of 8 lights but are placed as left/right side (2 lights together, then gap for metal halides, then 2more...right side is the same 2, gap, then 2.
http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/qq299/RICK81_bucket/001-2.jpg

here is a picture of the light rack installed inside the canopy.... i had to put a piece of wood both sides 1inch x 2inch to hold the rack in place and can just slide it in/out...notice the gap in between the 2nd and 3rd light bulbs (space is for the metal halides)
http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/qq299/RICK81_bucket/076.jpg

only difference in this one is to show how i tied the moonlight to under the light rack
http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/qq299/RICK81_bucket/077.jpg

and this one with the front panel opened up to see the full setup of the lights inside of the canopy.....still to come is to install the metal halides...

thanks...i'm also very happy with the quality of the stand. it is made of red oak wood all around with 2x4 making the mainframe and raised panel design on the doors... it took me a while to find the right place, they were all pretty much quoting me very expensive for the setup around $4,000.00. but that was just to expensive then found this place and they charged me $750 for it and extra to get the raised panel on the doors which the total came out to $950.00. i had given them a picture of what i wanted, although not exactly the same as i had asked for but in reality when i saw the results of this stand i was VERY, VERY HAPPY WITH A BIG SMILE.. had it made locally, at a shop where they do kitchen cabinets.....and sorry about the frag, hopefull later i can get you a frag of it...

as for the frags...so far out of the 35 frags that i bought only 3 didn't make it, and 1 of them is the Bobby's Tricolor frag that i bought from you (that was a huge frag) although there could be little hopes cause seems like there are 2-3 small branches that still have color in them..

I'm very happy with the quality, cuts, design and well pretty much everything

Nice! Good to know we have some good carpenters. Did you choose the design or did they just figure the shelves would serve good purpose?

My dad knows a carpenter he hires to make our cabinets and our desks but I don't know if it's the same guy. I think that guy is near HWY 35 going down Saunders... I THINK it's near by Sam's Liquor Store.

But good to know... I'm thinking about getting a bigger tank. You've motivated me. lol Until I get my own place though. Hopefully by then I'll be able to put things together without a problem. By that I mean all the tubing.

well i went through a company to have my stand made (didn't want to have any problems with anyone). I chose the design, and color of the stand, i took them a picture for them to customize it and they were suppose to have made it the same but they lacked some stuff in the design, but over all i was very happy with the end results, you can't really appreciate the job, material and cuts that were made through pictures... Well as far as the tubing i pretty much learned how to do it myself,it took me a long time but that is how you will learn, cuting here and there, then no too long/short and making several trips to home depot/Lowes. after you know exactly how your water is going to flow and what equipment you will be using then it should be better to figure it out.

well yeah everyone pretty much change their tanks more than once, they either upgrade or downgrade. as for me i upgraded, but still plan on maybe upgrading even to a bigger tank later in the future... well since there aren't too many of use "reefers" here locally in Laredo, you can always count on me for any help. if not here in maast there are alot of nice, talented and knowledgable people that are always willing to help. just ask many questions and you will learn by asking. everyday there is something new that comes up.

honestly the quality, cuts, and paintings of the stand look bettter in person. i was very impressed with the end product. you know how in some you can see where the wood is not really that smooth and the corners are just not right, well in this one its almost hard to find the edges and were the wood is joined..... as far as the side cabinet i got the idea off another picture of some stands, that i saw in the internet, the stand had drawers under the bottom portion of the stand, but you could see them through the front, and that is what i didn't want, and since in my kitchen i have one cabinet just for my fish stuff, i figured well why not make one as part of the stand so when i spoke to the carpenter i asked him if it was possible and well now you see it there....:shades:

Thanks Ricky81, I'm really glad to have found another "reefer" in Laredo.
I'm guessing you know how to frag as well?
I'm totally new to all of it and I've been trying to learn how to frag before I actually do it.

I can't post it on it's own thread but I have a Finger Leather Coral that's growing like crazy! I'm about to give a piece away to this other local reefer but I hardly know him. Gabe or Gabriel? A friend of mine said it was his brother in law.

yeah i have fragged a few stuff here in there but still learning with the zoas/palys, have picked up a few tricks from MAAST members... it's pretty cool. So yeah when ever you want just let me know and i can help you..

Gabe and myself are good reefer friends, he has helped me out alot when my 75gal tank crashed and half of my coral died.... we help out eachother by giving eachother small frags to get it going in our tanks, this past sunday he gave me a very nice, medium size coral, and i gave him 3 small frags of sps...so it's always good to have reefer friends, to help eachother out.

The tank looking good and coming along fine. I would really try to take that damsel out of the tank.

Good to know. Well I have that Finger Leather coral as I mentioned before that had been pushed off the rock. Thing grows pretty fast! I think there's another piece about to be shoved off the rock. They're very selfish with the light. lol

The day that my boyfriend and I visit your place, I'll take that coral with me to hand it over to Gabe.
