I picked up a new clam and it should be here tomorrow. :D It is a 2.5" Gold Aurora Maxima Clam. Cannot wait to see it all happy in the tank after FedEx drops it off. Now I need to find out where to put it. Do you start them in the sand and move them up or just place them in the rock. I get a lot of par even in the bottom of my tank.

I'll tell you where to put it -

You put it on a large open-faced shell at the bottom of my tank.

Jennifer read Clam talk with Barry, he suggests the Maxima put into the rock. (Clams Direct forum)

Rock it under water back and forth, upside down is the way it was shown to me.

I put mine right up top, but since yours is being shipped, I would give it a day or two at least to acclimate before your pulverize it with par and pictures! You don't want your flash to kill your clam! :p

I've tried putting my maximas I've had in the rock over and over and they always decided they wanted to just hang on the sand bed. I finally just let them and they did fine there even though that wasnt' the best spot for them. My tanks have usually all been fairly shallow though, under 24 inches on all of them.

Several months ago I purchased a crocea the the clams direct group buy and it is still doing good. Although maximas and croceas have different requirements I'm sure, the acclimation and placement may be similar. I placed mine on the sand bed but in a half clam shell that I got from lfs and left it there for about a wk. I put some rubble around it to in the shell to keep it from laying over. After about a wk, the foot attached to the shell and I then moved it up high and glued the bottom side of the shell in a wedged area of live rock. It stayed there for about 4 mos and about 2 months ago, it wiggled it's way off the glued shell and attached to the the same live rock it was glued to and has stayed there very happy. The theory is that it is easier to move the shell it is attached to and glue anywhere you might think it would like til you find that perfect spot. It has worked for me. Good luck and great lookin clam!
