I lost my sixline wrasse, he made it over into the overflow, throught the grating, into the sump and into the return line. Most of him shot out all over the tank(that is what gained my attention, but the rest of him lodged in the snail stopper on my iwaki, so I had to shut it down, and clean it out last night at 10:30. Good Times!

Gross! Sorry to hear about the loss of your sixline. I hate loosing fish. I would even hate more the cleanup at 10:30. Hope everything goes well for your tank.

Yuck. Fish smoothie!!!

Can you use a strainer in your over flow, or do you have a built in overflow with standpipe?

I have a 4 foot long Calfo built by Ace, and I have 90 degree street ells facing downward w/ external standpipes, + my canopy is about 80+ lbs(with all my lighting retro'd so removing is a chore by myself. I have to do that to access the overflow internally.

I work with servers alot and I think that nextime I do a tank build I am going to build a frame off the stand and have server rails move the whole canopy forward off the tank.

Hey Joe,

We also have a 4 foot calfo which we covered with eggcrate covered w/ screen. It keeps the fish out. We had a bi-color blenny and cleaner wrasses make it down to the socks, so we covered it. Shout if you want to come by sometime and check it out. HTH. - Mike (& Kristy)

Like Kristi's and Mike's set up, you could cut a piece of eggcrate to match the opening of that street-el, then glue it in. Should keep most of fish out.

Sounds like bastidge to get to it, but may be worth it in the long run.

Yeah, we started with egg crate up there to block the overflow, but the more determined (and smaller) fish kept managing to sneak through. I pulled out the egg crate and sewed on gutter guard (smaller grid squares than the egg crate), offsetting the squares so that the openings were then even smaller. Just sewed it by looping fishing line through all the way around. Now we have two pieces that fit on the overflow and we can pull them out to clean them if we need to once in a great while. Effective!
