I need to buy a quiet return pump for a 75 gallon tank. The pump will be under the tank in a sump. The water will need to travel up about 4 feet. I'm looking for personal opinions on the noise levels. Also, if anyone is selling a quite pump let me know what type and how much you are selling it for. I'll be in San Antonio on Saturday.

I had a mag 7 on a 75 gallon I had at one point and it wasn't too loud from what I remember, just a little hum.

How much return GPH are you looking for? 50PXX 1100GPH (quiet)or 40PX 500GPH (Extremely quiet) both Panworld, both quality pumps.

I use Mags and they are extremely quiet. I have a mag 12 for my return and a mag 5 for my skimmer and I can't hear either one of them.

I don't know how much return I'm going for yet. I mainly do LPS and zoanthids. I'm not really into SPS.
Looks like the Mags seem to have a good following (from above). Probably go that way.
Someone locally has a Rio 2100 pump. Anyone have experience with RIO or know if it is a good brand?

I'm a mag fan myself. I have a mag 9.5 for my 72 bow-front and I can't hear it at all. If I'm right I have always heard Rio's like to melt down and pollute the tank if you don't stay on top of them maintenance wise.

If you want a quiet pump that is energy efficient and will last, Eheim is the tops.

You will need 2 - 1" drains min. for the 50PXX and 1 - 1" for the 40PX. The first choice you need to make will be an in the sump pump or external?

Good to know about Rio's having problems.
Does anyone know if you can adjust the flow somewhat easily on a Mag-5 or Mag-7?

You can if you plumb it with a valve on the output line

The Poseidon series of pumps (check marinedepot) are virtually noiseless. They do add heat to the water, but this is a great pump where quiet is the first priority. I have a PS1 and it was used in my kitchen/family area without any noise issues.

Eheim 1262. put a true union gate or ball valve on the return line to adjust flow and allow for removal/maintenence.
