Just got a shipment of zoas yesterday from CA after after 5 days of shipping. There were some open polyps yesterday, but today they all closed and having a white THICK coat (sponge like) covering all over. I did acclimate and dipped for 45mins. Is this normal? and how long does it usually take for them to open up?.THANKS

"wow" five days thats a long time. what was the ph of the water before you started dripping? What is your tank ph. If you have good water condtions I would say in a day or two the polyps should start to open up. If not then ph shock maybe. Polyps are pretty tough and hard to kill, but five days that's a long time for stuff to be in a bag. I have gone a long as three to four days with snails and crabs but lost a few. Oh may try on giving them a break on the light.

I hate to have stuff shipped by USPS. Two to three day mail is a flat out lie!

some times bag water gets down to 7.4 or lower because of the co2 build up.

The tank was 7.9. I did not check the bag. Yeah i am really tired of USPS guarantee mail. The last shipment was sent to a neighbor 2 street down from my house.

I saw what you said the other day thanks. How big is yours? how much do you feed him? I have been in this hobbie for a while not a pro, but he is my baby and I really don't get help from the lfs.

He's about 6" with 1/2 streamers. had him since Christmas of 2007. I feed him once a day with homemake seafood mix and Dulse seaweed, but he eats anything i throw at him.. I did had him in a QT for about 2 weeks before introduced to the display. I fed him with varieties when he was in the QT.

Some added hope...
I have had polyps close up, die off and come back again but even healthier...2-4 weeks. I have had a Radioactive Dragon Eye colony closed up for almost two months now and it's "maybe" coming back. I saw some color emerging behind the closed polyps so I'm hoping for the best.
I don't count them a loss until the polyps are gone.

First, did you really dip them for 45 minutes? That seems a really long time for a dip. They look fine in your picture, probably just irritated. I bought a power head from a guy in San Marcus one time. Waited almost 2 weeks to set it up. When I open the plastic he had wrapped it in, I found 2 slightly damp polyps wedged in the grill. A dab of super glue and they came back strong.

25 minutes in Logul solution and 20 minutes in TPMCC and Flatworm Exits.

They will probably be ok. They really look irritated in the pic. Sometimes after acclimating mine some of them stayed closed for up 3 days before poping out. So don't lose hope. If they look like they are falling apart or the hermits start eating them then it is a pretty good indication they are dead. Other than that I would leave them alone and see how they do.
