Well Ive been thinking about getting out of the hobby for a while now, and when I got home today I think my decision was made for me. My tank is in the process of crashing I am starting water changes and running carbon. Alot of my sps colonys are sluffing and the water is getting cloudy. I am going to try and save as much as I can and when things get back to normal if they do, I will be selling off most of my stuff. KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED.

Barry, if anyone lives close to you have someone take care of your corals. THe cloudy stuff might just be from all the slime the acros produced. Do you have any caulerpa is your system?

BARRY!!! #$%!@ it, why didn't you call me?

1) I have a pretty much empty 215. I can take anything you want to save, at least temporarily

2) I have a HIATT filter, up and running. It takes all of 3 minutes to disconnect, and throw in your car/truck. It WILL save a tank from crashing.

Well it looks like 3years of growimg SPS has come to an end I only have a few that are still hanging on but it doesnt look good for them either. I was planning on selling all my corals to fellow Maastards but it doesnt look like that will happen now unless some one is looking for nice white skeletons.HA Now I know what it means when they say a coral reef has bleached. It is not a pretty site especially when you have watched all of your corals grow from frags that were aquired from fellow Maast members I will update when the ordeal is over with some of the corals that I lost. SIDE NOTE:: I am not looking for hand outs or frag replacements When I am ready I will start over Thank you all for your support.

Man, sorry to hear barry. I hate it when something like this happens. I guess we can all learn from it. Do you have any idea yet of what might have caused the crash?

So sorry Barry...and I know how it feels...lost all my SPS also about a month ago. And still don't know what actually caused the crash after using a low dose of Red Slime Control. I hope you won't walk away from it. I felt like it also, but I'm into rebuilding and feeling good...finally. If I can help in any way...pls LMK. Just glad you've gotten things under some control. Good luck. Keep us updated.

My condolences.

I've been pretty nervous myself with downgrading from a 120 to a 24g. In my opinion things seemed easier with the big tank and now with the small tank my every move makes a signifigance difference on parameters. There was more room for error in the lrg tank.

Good luck to you.

Yeah, I'm the same way. I was ready to throw in the towel at Christmas. I'm sloooowly rebuilding.

Rob, I've found the best way to handle a nano - even a big nano like a 24, is massive water changes. 2 buckets of water is about a 50% water change. On mine/my daughter's, I just change 5 gallons, which is 1/2, every few weeks.

Thanks, Bill. I'll take your advice, I have only been doing very small weekly water changes, for fear that I would make things unstable too quickly.

I agree with bill.. I change about 1/3 a week. Corals like it

Rob if you change 8g a week, everything in your tank will love it...we are doing 15g a week on Cheri's 56g corner Zoonation.

Back on topic:
All SPS gone except birdsnest but it dont look good, LPS are still alive zoas and ricordia and clam still alive,
When I started taking the dead corals out I noticed a real funky smell,it wasnt like the tipical dead coral smell. it had a smell that was pungent not fishy almost like a rot smell. So far the only thing that was different was a new bucket of IO Salt

How bout the sand bed? Did you stir things around? Was the smell comparable to rotten eggs?

Back on topic:

LOL! Sorry Barry! Thanks everyone for the tips!

Hey Barry, I'm back on topic now...

...Do you have an open tank and maybe some housekeepers or possibly some cleaning solutions or sprays that ended up airborne and into the tank causing the crash and not being detectable in testing the water? Just a thought. We have house cleaners once a month and that has always been a fear of mine even though I use canopies...they use organic products but you never know....

No didn't touch sand bed, the smell was like a fermented skimmer smell but it had a weird pungent smell to it some thing I haven't smelled before so it is kind of hard to explain.

The tank has a full canopy on it and there hasn't been any sprays in the air I'm really careful about that, I clean around the tank and the glass with water only.
This one has got me completely baffled I can usually figure out what went wrong when things happen but so far this time I am stumped.

Dead SPS has a really funky smell to it - sort of part dead snail, part nasty skimmate smell, part rotten egg smell. Not overpowering (like a dead snail), but not like seawater, which is what they usually smell like.
