I'm currently working on my 210gal RR setup and needed help with what size of Return pumps should i use...

the tank dimensions are 72Lx24Wx29H...tank is pre-drilled with (two) 1inch Drain lines and (two) 3/4 inch for return lines

pumps will be located in the sump which will probably be a total of 5.4ft below the tank and be using 3/4 inch pvc pipes for the returns

are you looking for an internal pump or external pump?

your choice really depends on how you set things up. you want slow flow through your refugium section and a bit faster flow through your skimmer section. do you plan on feeding other devices with this pump (ie calcium reactor, phosphate reactor, chiller, etc)? if so, you can go with a larger pump.

on my 180, i'm running a mag 9.5. i have very low turnover through the sump which is what you want.

i used a sequence dart on my 215 and used it for chiller but looking back would probably use something with less gph...since it will be in sump, look into a large eheim

Mag pumps work pretty good. You have the option to use in sump or outside the sump.

In my 200g i had 2 quiet one 4000s with 3/4 inch returns and it worked ok. I still had to put in 4 max jet 1200 because it wasn't enough.

If i had to do it again i would go with some bigger pumps like some darts.

I am looking for an internal water pump... i do plan on setting up a chiller down the road with calcium and kalkwasser reactor later in a few months since i need to give it time to cycle so will still be able to have some time for the other equipments....

do you guys have any pictures of your setups (plumbing sections) to get some ideas...

i am planning on spliting one of my drain lines to flow through my refugium and then have a small pump to help it drain to the skimmer area because my refug is going to be on a separate 20gal tall tank.

Having an internal water pump for that size of tank and lift will be like having a 150 watt heater in your sump running 24/7. Just asking why are you stuck on internal? Something like a Pan World 50-PXX is quiet and uses air to cool the pump instead of the water. On a 75gal with a tall stand I used a mag. 18 with a 1" drain and a 3/4" return. I used the pump externally. One word of caution some companies will not warranty mag pumps if you use them externally.

I use a sequence barracuda on my 215. I turned it off awhile back and tried a much smaller pump. I did this to see if I could save some $ on electricity. I figured the low turnover rate would be fine cause have a tunze stream and a vortec in the display. the experiment lasted almost 2 weeks. the tank started looking funky, foam started collecting on the surface of the water, experiment over.

well i thought that i could get away with saving some space and using an internal pump bump now i'm stuck here...

i see that a lot of you guys mentioned that you all use (sequence darts, swd, etc..) what do they do?

Darts are not commonly used for return pumps, they are used for closed loops mainly. They pust 3600 gph, might be a little bit too much turnover for a sump

my sequence pump is the barracuda, Its even more powerfull than the dart. As I determined with my experiment, ny tank is waaay healthier with it. my tank is the same as your tank just 6" taller.

ok so i decided to get the barracuda water pump for my 210 gal setup but wanted to ask a question....... i want to hook up 4 appliances (2-sea swirls, and 2 return pipes)

my question is.... is there a device or a hook up that i can use or do that will give me 4 outlets when hooked up to the pump??

The best IN-SUMP pump is by far is the Eheim 1262. These pumps are virtually indestructible and last forever and by far produce the least amount of heat. You don't want to have a lot of turnover thru the sump, you want to have a lot of flow in the tank.

one of my two - 1 inch drains will have a T in the drain lines and will drain down to the refugium and the flow to the refugium will be regulated by a ball-valve.... i just need some kind of an appliance to make and 4 way split to hook up the barracuda pump...

I HAVE A 150GAL REEF READY TANK THAT I WILL START WORKING ON AND THE PUMP WAS ONE OF MY FIRST CONCERNS SO I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THIS. I AM GOING TO EXTERNAL BECAUSE IT WILL BE LESS HEAT ON MY TANK. THE PAN WORLD 50PXX IS MY CHOICE OF PUMP BECAUSE I HAVE READ AND HEARD NOTHING BUT GOOD THINGS ON THIS PUMP. YOU CAN GET THEM FOR $139.00 TO $169.00 AT MARINE DEPOT OR IF I AM NOT MISTAKING AT FISHY BUSINESS.COM FOR MAYBE CHEAPER. LOOK THESE PUMPS UP COMPARE THEN MAKE YOUR CHOICE I HAVE.

If you go external make sure you use unions and shutoffs between the tank/pump, and the sump/pump. This way you can remove the pump for maintenance and just shut off the water from each direction. You can see one in the picture the one on the left side.

i have placed several unions and will be placing shutoff valves in all my pipelines... i learned this the hard way with my current 75gal. (no unions and only 1 shutoff valve) and have learned from here in maast many ideas. thanks for advice.
