Along similar lines, when seeding dead rock with live rock should this be done in the main tank? Is there any curing process involved? About how long does it take to seed? I currently have 32 lbs of dead rock in a Rubbermaid tub with a heater and a filter. I have not added a live rock.

yes, rinse then add . I get a small cycle when I add dry dead rock to my system.usually the new rocks will get some green film algea , sometimes a little cyano then it goes away after a month or so.After that the good stuff starts to grow coraline, feather dusters , sponge ect.

I try to soak dry rock / rubble in seawater for a month or longer. I use a 10g tank and a powerhead. I believe this helps with some of the cycling. Dry rock contains alot of dead matter in the pores.

As Ping says, I wouldn't just dump it in. In my big tank, I'm cycling old rock from the tank from outside, into my 55 for a week or so, and then into my big tank.

You might try a handful or 2 every week.

I agree with both Ping and Bstreep, if you just dump it in your tank you will soon have alot of gunk in your tank because the stuff in the small holes of the rock will come out.

It is probably only 4 handfulls of rubble. Another reefer gave it to me when I was purchasing some fish from him. I have a 50 gallon fuge with 30 gallon sump and a 125 gallon display, are you sure it will make a big difference?
