I've spent the last 8 hours trying to get my HOB overflow to be less noisy and I'm SO frustrated!!! It is no better. I got the water returning to my sump to be really quiet but now the box on the back is making so much noise I can't stand it! Any ideas?

Grasping at straws here....could I be trying to move too much water for the size of my tank? It's a 90g tank with a 20g sump. I'm using a supreme classic 1200GPH. I was thinking along the lines of "slower moving water makes less noise"!

What kind of overflow? I know on my cpr I just had to adjust the straw up and down till it went away. If your doesn't have a hole on the top of the drain strainer make one and insert a piece of air hose and adjust it up and down to help stop the gurgling.

The noise is like rushing water...sounds like someone filling a bathtub!! The good new is that I fixed the gurgleing...not sure how!! Now I just have to fix the waterfall!! I'm so tried and frustrated!! :at_wits_end:I will try the bioball thing tomorrow...what chamber do I put them in? The ones on the side where the water runs out?

Rubble rock is better than bio balls(nitrate factory). You may want to try with a smaller return pump maybe 600gph, 1200gph going thru a 20g sump is too fast. Water does not have enough time to go thru filtrations. I kinda like the waterfall effect noise, it also let me know that everything is working.

So you have a waterfall splashing coming over your first baffle going into main holding/refugium in your sump from your overflow? If that's the case all you need to do is break up the flow by adding baffles going down to the holding area. I was lucky all i did was add a piece of foam where it was rushing over and it stopped it by diffusing the flow.

It's been a long time since I used an HOB overflow. I think I remember using an elbow inside the box right before the water drains down.

I rolled up a nice section of that white/blue fliter media into a roll that fit into the box behind the tank before the water lets into the tubes to the sump below. This broke the water fall sound... Only problem that I faced was when I left the filter in there too long and it began to back up. I change it now about once to twice a month.

Okay so I fiddled with it again this morning and have the sump part perfect. So the only noise I have now is from the overflow box itself....more of a flushing/gurgling sound now. I'm going to try the stockman mod and see if that helps....off to Homedepot!!

Do you have a durso? Take a piece of tubing - semi rigid - like icemaker tubing, and put it down the hole so it runs past the part where the incoming water goes into that drain. That will allow the trapped air to escape.

I would think you have too much flow through the sump. It is suggested to have 3x or 5x. That would be only 270 to 450 gph. Less water flow would help the skimmer do a better job.

I think you were right....too much flow! I put in a ball valve and slowed the flow a little and it's 100% better. I still have to play with it a little in the morning because I'm getting a med sized air bubble in one of the U tubes in my overflow but I'm pretty happy with the noise level right now!
