Well I have been looking for a beautiful anemone for a while and I picked up this beauty from B&B of Friday. She is Big and beautiful! I know she is difficult but I am willing to give it a try (she is worth it).

Any advice would be great!

Beautiful anemone! I hope it does well. The hosting clowns are supposed to make anemonies do better.

Update:

It's been 7 days since I've had her and she looks just as pretty as when I got her, but two days ago we had a scare. I got home from work and fed my tank with reef roids (first time using it) a few hours later I noticed that her mouth was open and she didn't feel sticky and she was severely deflated, the next morning she was still deflated and didn't look good. When I arrived home from work she looked worse. I did a 15% water change and she immediately started getting better, by night time her mouth was somewaht closed and she had increased considerably in size. Today she is still doing good but her mouth doesn't close all they way, she seems to always have a smiley face. The only time she completely closed her mouth was after feeding. She has been moving about an inch each day, towards the center of the halide.

Don't feed the anemone until they are completely healthy.

Don't they need food to help them recover?

Bleached corals need food, yours doesn't appear to be bleached.

I think when the anemone deflates and inflates, it is trying to get rid of infection in the body cavity. Put food into it will only fuel the bacterial infection. That is the reason why when anemones are not well, they do very poorly to feeding and will deflate after regurgitate the food.

That makes sense thank you. She looks a little flat today and her mouth is still open about the size of a dime.

any updates?

my blue that came in at the same time went thru a couple of unhappy (looked a little smaller) times last week, but seems to be doing very well again now since i moved the rock it is on into more flow and higher light.

Well Ace she has been looking great until this morning. She deflated today and she has not been wanting to eat. I am going to do a water change when I get home. I can't get her to stay happy!!!

hmmm.... you still have the 150 watt halides? if so, it may be too little light with her so low in the tank. you could try building the rock pile up and putter her on the top of it (assuming she is still attached to a rock), just carefully move the rock she is on aside and build up the rocks for it to sit on. also, i would stop feeding it directly for a while, just feed the fish directly over it and small scraps should settle for her to eat.

I don't mean to hijack this thread (or sound stupid) but I thought it was a natural process for anemones to deflate while producing waste through their mouth, there after they reinflate to their orginal size and splender? Or did I miss something...

for some, like S. gigantea and H. magnifica, this process can indicate health issues if it happens very often at all.

Ok thanks for the clarification. I assume this is not the case for BTA?

is it the same case for BTA?

hobogato

no, they tend to deflate occasionally without problems. still, they should not do it too often. dont confuse this with their hiding in the rocks at night - a pretty common occurrance. i am talking about the anemone looking like a deflated balloon.

my BTA dose this bout once a week but I have another one that consist, however at night with the moon lights on and it get hugh.

My BTA deflates as often as I feed it. If don't feed it for a week, it only deflates once. Even at night it is realitively large and inflated, enough for two small clowns to be completely immersed. I thought it was natural cycle but I want to be sure....

sorry for the hijack mrsz28prw..... we could start a new thread for this discussion if needed.

back to the big carpet, do you have clown hosting in it? if so, what kind?

Its all very good information Ace......my BTA always deflated but she was sooo healthy and doubled in size. When I purchased her she was greenish with a little purple. Then she turned pink & blue & green Allen has her now.

Well my Ocellaris clown fish are hosting my carpet. They love her!!! They moved out of the BTA the same day. Even my sexy shrimp packed her bags and left her Anemone. She moved to the rock next to the carpet and drools over her all day!!!

We are doing a water change now so hopefully she will do well. And my husband thinks Im high maintenance. Nope, Mrs. S. gigantea takes the cake!!

The picture below shows her mouth wide open. But she is still sticky

be careful with the water changes, i have noticed that mine is least happy when i do the water change and any of the new water gets anywhere close to it before mixing in with the tank well. for this reason, i pour all new makeup water in the sump as far away from the return pump as possible to make sure it is well mixed in before it even gets to the main tank.

We just noticed the DKH is 14 and the ph is @ 8.0 (new water) . We didn't put it in the tank. The water change is on hold.....

Ace, I'm going to leave her alone and not change anything tonight. I don't want to do more damage. Thanks for the info...... I hope she makes it:at_wits_end:

It has been over 31 days since we have had this beautiful anemone. She is finally doing better. Problem solved!!! She needed more light!!! She moved to the top of the aquarium and seems to be 80% better. More flow and more light. :whew:

She is VERY VERY sticky and her mouth is closed. We will be replacing our lights soon. Or we will have to end up selling her to someone who has the lighting to support her.
