Does anyone know what could cause a black spot on a percula clown right above the dorsal fin, behind the head? Clown has been in the tank for about 1 1/2 months, all paramiters are good, no visible signs of stress... I dont even know if the spot is life threatening, but it concerns me non the less.

Is it hosting anything that stings like frogspawn, torch, etc?

No, I have a green bubble tip that is about 4" across that he wont go near.

Depending on the black spot, what you could be seeing is Hyper Melaninization; burn marks from coral that clownfish get over time when they rub themselves in corals or inverts such as frogspawn or zoas. Its just a reaction (burn if you will) from the toxin from the coral or inverts. Nothing to worry about.

How long for it to heal?

It generally doesnt. Many times the burns are permanent.

My Onyx Clowns have them...actually they have a bunch of them. It adds character, and I guess it doesn't matter too much on Onyx clowns because the areas will most likely fill in black anyways.

How about spot feeding near the anemone...it will force the clowns near it and hopefully they'll see it.
