Had not added any new fish since upgrading my tank about 6 weeks ago. Picked up a nice longnose hawkfish and tiny blue tang (little over the size of a quarter) last night. Tang looked a bit skinny but otherwise healthy. Dumped them both in after a 2hr drip. Tang looked stressed and stayed in upper corner of the tank then disappeared under a rock after lights out. When I got back from work the tang was gone! After much searching, was ready to start pulling apart some rockwork when I looked in the sump and found him swimming around in the filter sock. After his trip through the plumbing (must have jumped into the overflow) he's back in the tank now and looks OK , picking on the glass and rocks and swimming around. After all this stress , looking for the best way to get him fattened up quickly. I've got algae clipped onto the glass, cyclopeeze, frozen brine/spirulina, frozen mysis, and small pellet. Any thoughts on the best dietary regimen for this guy?

i have found that live macro works the best for new tangs

also, when they are that small, they need to eat almost continuously. feed small amounts of food as often as possible without sacrificing water quality.

Don't have any live macro other than chaeto. Any place local I can pick some up?

I'm guessing they would want grape caulerpa... My tang doesn't seem to like razor...

You might also look for Fuzzy-Phytes: http://www.reefnutrition.com/fuzzyphytes/index.htm

Some have had success feeding baby tangs with it.

Also, some people feed well-rinsed broccoli to their tangs.

You just have to find something they seem to like and try to give some regular variety.

Those Fuzzy-Phytes look tasty. Will check at AD this weekend, since I think I've seen reefnutrition products there before.

Remember to let your fingers do the walking... a lot cheaper than gas!

rub the clipped on algae between your fingers after it is soggy. Tang heaven.

be careful with that hawkfish. if it's hungry enough and/or big enough, it might go after that little tang.

I'll keep an eye on the hawk. It's pretty small, maybe 2-2.5in. Found the tang in the sump filter sock again this morning. Like things aren't hard enough as it is...this is ridiculous. Rigged up a sponge in the overflow as a temporary measure until I can find some gutter guard. Seemed to like soggy mushed up algae sheet. Thanks for the tip Scorpiono.

Might be able to use eggcrate or cut some styrofoam to fit and block the overflow. Watch the long nose, they are jumpers also, so he might make the trip down to the sump or out of the tank. Long nose hawks are one of my favorites, with a lot of personality. Good luck.

Picked up some arctic-pods as well as something called Macro-Feast. It is live red macro (Gracilaria pacifica) for feeding and growth in the fuge. Looks like a good product.
