Thanks y'all. :blushing:

I'll be getting to your photos soon, Steve.

These were all shot handheld and without a flash. There was such a great turnout for the tank tour that there was not really much time or room to fully set up the camera. A good challenge for sure.

But the big question is who's tank(s) do the photos posted already belong to from the tour??

I'm going back and adding names with the photos. Please let me know if I get them wrong.

what camera?
what settings?
flash?
if flash, remote or stock camera flash?
tripod?
timer?
were pumps, powerheads, wavemakers turned off?

sorry about all questions, but nice pics, I have to fool around and take lots to get any good ones.

Canon 40D using a 100mm macro lens
No Onboard Flash, remote shutter / timer, or External Flash.... all natural tank light.
No tripod but braced the camera on level surfaces as much as possible.
All pumps, powerheads and wavemakers were still running.

Definitely a challenge!!

Settings varied depending on the amount of light, fish or non-moving coral, and whether I could brace the camera. In some shots, I had to set the ISO to 800, Aperture 2.8 - 5.6 just to get a somewhat decent photo. One thing to remeber is to try to keep the shutter speed higher than the mm of the lens (100mm macro) to stay out of truouble with blurry images. You may still get them but it can help.

In an ideal setting:

The pumps would be off

I prefer to use a flash on fish only shots to keep up with their activity level and get better detail of their features. The camera would be hand held with the flash pointed down from above the tank. Set the shutter speed to sync with the flash (usually 250), ISO 200, and adjust the aperture to @ 11-16 to get the most detail of the fish possible.

For corals, no flash but have the camera mounted on a tripod using a remote shutter release / timer for the shot. ISO as low as possible, time doesn't really matter, setting the aperture depending on how much I want to be in focus. Just keep an eye on the exposure level.

Like Ace said its a feather star. I'll try to get a picture of it when it is open and feeding. It won't be anywhere near as good as the ones in this thread though.

Sorry this is so off topic form the pics from the tank tour, but what is the crinoid compatible with it (fish, etc.)? What lighting does it need? We have 4 250w 14K and 4 T5 with chiller, plus 3 angels and a tang....

Don't believe everything you read... we have had our basket star (closely related and has the same reputation) for close to 2 years and it is doing fine. I target feed it everyday and it spreads out at night. When it is all spread out, the middle section is thick and fat, so I don't think it is starving. But what works for one person in their tank... Mike

Ok... a caveat from Kristy:
Apparently this is because we got really lucky and happened to come across one that takes prepared foods, which is supposedly very unusual. Seems to be a little like a mandarin in that you occasionally luck out with one that adapts to prepared foods, but MOST will only eat what they can get in the wild, and will not do well in captivity. We would NOT have bought it knowing this, but ours came as a "bonus" wrapped around the gorgonian we were buying and we had no idea what we were getting (total newbies then).
