I see all kinds of non-scientific names for coral's being thrown about. What are the rules regarding this? Do I try and id a specimen first, or can I just go ahead and name it Princess Consuela Banana Hammock. Or, is this just an informal thing, since most of the coral's scientific names are unpronouncable?

are you talking about a name like 'green slimer' or something like 'paletta's blue lovelli'?

names like the first are often general names that people use for identifying corals when, like you said, the long name is unrememberable [<--my word of the day...] or just inconvenient. most often these include some sort of the actual name. names such as 'pink/green damicornis', 'pink stylophora' or 'blue milli' are quite common.

names like the second are used when a particular person, member, reefer has had great success caring for a coral in captivity or has developed a unique morph/strand. these names sometimes have part of the actual name, but not always. names in this category include 'ora miami orchid', 'phil's granulosa', 'atl pink lemonade', 'tubbs blue', 'valentine's day massacre'.

i am sure others have a different perspective on this, but this is the reasoning i have developed-i might be totally off. we'll see if others agree or not. hope it helps.

oh and if your can develop a truly hardy specimen or unique morph-i would agree that Princess Consuela Banana Hammock would be an awesome name. i would be first in line, talk about a conversation starter.

The longer the common name, the more expensive you can sell them for. So if you name your coral Nuclear Waste Green People Eater with Atomic Red Spots, I am sure you can sell them for thousand of dollars. And don't forget to also call it Triple Rare Limited Edition. So the full common name will be:
Triple Rare Limited Edition Nuclear Waste Toxic Sludge Green People Eater with Atomic Red Spots
You can sell one of these and get all the money for your next large system.

When I get my own morph I will ask you guys to help me name it. I would like the extra money it might generate.

Yeah, I was talking about the names like "Radioactive super green panini star polyps" for $250. Can I also sponsor the aussia aptasia?

Better yet, I'll trade you for a piece of my "Metriculated Fuzzy Vibrant Green Derbesia". It's pretty easy to care for, and can handle just about any tank out there.
