Below 82 for sure... As your tank gets hotter, you'll get more algea growth. Also you want to make sure that there is as little fluctuation in temp as possible. Right now my tank is running hot, around 83 because i just added a new light fixture and within 24 hours i can already see algea growth increase. I cant afford a chiller, so I will get a fan and hopefully that helps bring the temp back down towards 78-79 degrees.

I have a madarin dragonet and he seems to be okay with the temp... How long did yours take to die? Dont want to jinx it, but when i got him from the pet store he was really skinny, now hes fattened up a bit and looks healthy.

I think what's important is that the temp does not jump around too quickly.

My tank has been running 79-83 for the last 2 years. I have a mixed reef and it stays at 79 with lights out and gradually climbs to 83 at the peak of the daylights. I have also had a mandarin for over a year now with no problems. Also, my clowns breed regularly and I know the clutch will develop better in that temp range which is why I do not try to lower it.

Ruben your mandarin is not dieing because your tank gets to 82, it may be dieing because it is rising to 82 too quickly but not because the temp is AT 82. Maybe it's related to pod population. Note: It takes a fish months die of starvation, so if he is dieing 2-4months after you get him then he's probably starving.

Drastic temp changes can be a problem.

Note, we keep our home at 74 degrees f and I run a small heater that is never on because the pumps and equipment keeps the heat up. I also run a fuge light 24/7.

What temp will be too hot? Not that I would let my tank get much above 83, but just wondering.

Not sure, because if things are done with stable conditions a lot is possible. But I know that quick changes in anything can be bad.

For me personally, if my tanks start to ever go above 84+ I will probably do something to rectify the situation.

If I run my MH for longer than 6 hours my temp will start to breach 83. So I run them for 6 hours and add two hours of actinics on the front and back end to increase the viewing time of the tank.

Honestly if my tank was stable at 80 and I saw it rise to 81 or even 82 I would quickly see what was causing the spike. The spike or drop out of your normal parameters is what's important in regards to problems.

My parameters are all spot on, just too much heat from the lights. The stands i have sets the fixture about 3 1/2 inches off the water and if i run them full daylight (4 48" 10k and 4 48" atinic) for more than 5-6 hours, the temp in the tank shoots up.

I was including "temp" when I said "tank parameters".

I added a good sized plastic fan from walmart to blow at my MH and that helped tremendously. I run it on a timer and it kicks on when the MH comes on and stays on for an hour after the MH goes off. Without it I was only able to get 5 hours out of my MH.

Sorry, in that case my parameters are off:shades:

Im gona try that, but ill probly put it on the fuge first as a test to try and conceal it in the stand.

Any added air/ventilation will help. I put mine on the MH because I have a canopy. My next move if I still had heat issues was to add a fan over the fuge. Good luck.

Thanks. I need to look into a canopy, but for now ill just stick with the fan on the fuge.

Does anyone know about compact fluorescent lights and how much heat they give off - I would think much less than MH and it would cause temperature changes

Which means they died because of the drastic change...and ich pops up from the stress and ultimately killing your fish.

Sorry about that man.

My temp just moved up to 82 83 cause I got a new fixture, it goes up and down from that range, I have no fish, only coral and anemone. But the water does not feel that warm

mine's been running at 83 degrees for over a year with no issues, i'd love to have it lower...but i can't afford the electric bill that my chiller would create. like other have said, i believe it has more to do with temp swings than the temp itself....to a point of course.

I hope that is ok till I can get some fans blowing
