OK, I'm going to make our reservation at Port Aransas Marina - we are DEFINATELY going this year.
Since we will have our boat there, our dinghy will also be there - it's an 11' long inflatable with a 9.9 horse outboard. Might be able to get us to some interesting spots.

I will say, we are getting a very good deal, the hotel is pet friendly (well unfriendly if you own a pit bull/rottweiler) Everyone will need to respond quick, there are only 48 rooms available. I blocked the entire hotel. (2 rooms were already pre-booked)

Does anyone know of any hotels out there that would allow a Rottweiler? I've got two mixes out of the 9 dogs in my house, but I'd really like to bring my 11 1/2 year old female Rott that has three legs and is a cancer survivor. She's never been to the beach and I'd like her to experience it before she passes.

Dee, I am unaware of any, maybe if you call the hotel and communicate this situation, maybe they will work with you. I believe the person who is handling our account is Raquel. Also is you venture to Port Aransas' web site, there is a list of hotels there.

I know the Holiday Inn on Ocean Drive in CC allows pets...you might want to check with them in case you can't find anything in Port A. It's the only one that I can think of right now.

I think that Shark Reef Inn accepts pets.
And count me in on this trip. If you guys are also interested in touring the TPWD Hatchery in Flour Bluff let me know and I can handle the arrangements for that.

Charter Members are free and Webmembers cost $10 for the BBQ. We will have T-shirts available with a donation, because with the Bigbird on them, we can't sell them (copyrights) but we ask for a donation to cover the cost. You need collection items and a lot of willingness to have fun. Also, a few dollars for the motel. These are real nice rooms and will start going fast.

This is a line from the article: everyone heads to the Jetties, to collect Peppermint Shrimp, Blennies, Damsels, Seahorses, and it has been known a few Raccoon Fish
Raccon fish? Is this a raccoon butterfly? They are a Pacific Ocean fish. What Raccoon fish do you catch at Port Aransas?
Mike
aggie4231

I don't know what raccon fish they are talking about, but if they are implying a raccon butterfly, then they are 100% totally wrong. You can find butterfly fish on the Jetty. the only ones that I've seen caught on these trips are juvenilles, therefore hard to identify to the specific species, but there are 2 species found in the Gulf. I believe(don't have the book in front of me) the most common butterfly found along the jetties is the spotfin butterfly.

yea ill even stay in a tent, if im not goin to be there during the day(too hot for a tent ), showers are decent but its a nice park. prices are fair. but if your looking for really nice place there are a couple on the island that have hook ups just gotta search a lil online to find them.

ya theres one over by the jetties with hook ups but they dont take reservations its first come first served. it has ac in the restroom and showers but the walk from rv to the showers restrooms is all sand so u will get dirty walkin bac after shower. but the ocean is right on the other side and walkin distance to the jetties.

I will definatley be stopping by to say hey and maybe help collect. I just want to let everyone know however, that if you are planning on collecting any of the whip coral or oculina then I think you need a special permit from TPWD. I may be wrong on this, but when my Fiance was collecting whip coral for her Masters thesis she had to have a special permit from TPWD, that may be due to the number of specimens she was collecting, but you should definately check into what species you are allowed to collect with a fishing license and which ones you are not.

You can collect whip coral with a fishing license, though I don't know why you'd want to collect it anyway. Probably just a numbers thing, b/c the only gorgonians that are off-limits are the common sea fan Gorgonia ventalina and the Venus sea fan Gorgonia flabellum, which I doubt you'll see here in Texas aside from maybe out at Flower Gardens. Oculina and all other stonies are off-limits.

As stated in the Main post, there will be a breakfast buffet at the Hotel Sat and Sun morning. The cost will be approx. $10 per person per day. This will be a FULL buffet with eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, etc. We need to have a head count to make sure there is enough food and verify the cost. Also, once the head count is established, this will need to be paid in advance. This is provided by the hotel.
Also, the BBQ and the Bob Fenner Speaking engagement will be $10 per person and we need ahead count for this also. MAAST Charter Members are free at the BBQ.
We also will have 5th Annual Bigbird Port Aransas Collection Trip and BBQ T-shirts available with a donation.
This should be a great event and we are looking forward to see you all there.
Please post you Web name, affiliation and how many will be with you.

We can use any type of wood that is free of nails, screws or wire. It is best not to use any treated wood because when burned it emits toxic fumes. We have a truck load but more is welcomed. LMK what ya got...

Actually you only need a permit if you plan to park on the beach anywhere south of the pier. North of the pier(towards the jetty) is free parking. Also, if you plan to go even farther south towards Corpus you will need a Corpus beach parking permit.

I guess it depends on who you talk to. I received 3 different versions from 3 different people. I bought one anyway last week when we were there. I would rather pay $12 than the citation, but I just got off the phone with the City of Port A and where we park by the jetties does not require a permit because it is in the county.

It looks like there is plenty of excitement around this event but if there is anyone on the fence as to whether or not to attend let me try and help….
I’m currently working on my PhD here in Port A at the Marine Science Institute so I see the Gulf and jetties everyday. Since I have been here I have never seen the water so clear! Anyone that has spent any significant amount of time here can tell you that normally the visibility sucks! This is one positive thing about a drought in this area if you snorkel or scuba dive because as the bays turn hypersaline due to lots of evaporation and little/no freshwater input, the traditional estuaries turn into reverse estuaries. This means that instead of water flowing from the low salinity bay into the gulf it does the opposite because the full strength seawater in the gulf becomes less salty than the bay water. This causes offshore water in the gulf to get sucked into the bays through the Jetties like a straw making the inshore water much clearer than normal.
This has been the case here for about a month (since the bays turned hypersaline) and should continue unless we get several days of heavy rain. Therefore barring a major rain event, this year should provide some of the best visibility in years (I am visualizing people tracking me down because it poured rain a few days before the event because I jinxed it :p).
I can also tell you a bit about the species diversity of local tropicals since I have done several dives on the jetties and offshore rigs recently. There are the usual suspects that show up every year such as Sergeant majors, cocoa damsel juvs (bright blue and yellow), molly miller blennies, tessalated blennies (olive body with bright orange spots… very cool), juv triggers and scrawled filefish. I have also seen a few spotfin butterflies, French angel juvs, blue angel juvs, Spanish hogfish, spiny box puffers, bluehead wrasse, slippery wrasse, and scrawled cowfish. Most of these are far more common on the rigs but a few have made onto the jetties, with the exception of the cowfish which you can find in the seagrass beds along with several species of gobies, pipefish, shrimp and seahorses.
PS. I am also involved in Gulf Coast Reef and Aquaculture with DrMark and we are hoping to get everything operational for the weekend of this trip. Hopefully I will get a chance to meet some of you there since I will be doing field work in Belize for my dissertation until that Sunday and will likely miss most of the festivities.
If you need more info on collection sites, techniques, or anything else don’t hesitate to ask!
Cheers!

From the Ferry:
You take Cotter St straight to the water, you are at the jettie we will be collecting from.
From the Hotel:
Take a left from parking lot and go to Red light (Cotter St) turn right and go to the water, jettie is on left at shoreline.
One word of caution, when leaving the pavement onto the sand, pay attention. There is soft sand to the left side of the dunes and YOU WILL GET STUCK. I know from experience.

Depending on what you're looking for, there are many other sites to collect in Port A that contain a great diversity of tropicals but don't require a long, treacherous walk while carrying a load of stuff. I believe Alex will be leading a day collecting trip and I have given him info on a couple sites and collecting techniques that have worked well for me in the past on the jetties.
As a side note, I just did a dive on the jetties this afternoon and it seems there has been a new wave of newly settled spotfin butterflies, about 1/2 long and really cute. Also the vis has been really good (have look at my post a couple pages back).

Its a looooong way out there! Be very careful, make sure you plan every step, especially on the way back, it'll be dark so make SURE you have a bright light and fresh batteries... Id also recommend saving any 'adult' beverages for when you get off the jettys, the rocks will be wet and some will have hidden algae on them, one misplaced step and you could easily break a leg.... Its a blast but it can also very dangerous especially if this is your first time... Wish I could be there...

Thank you Steve, Cheri and everyone else that worked so hard to make this trip possible. This was our first time attending a collection trip...and it was such a blast. The kiddos enjoyed collecting as well. Also nice to finally be able to put a face with the names we have seen on this board. We enjoyed meeting and listening to Mr. Bob Fenner...what a great man!
Now that we are home...we need to figure out what to do with all these shrimp.

Just made it home and have started acclimating the shrimp. I am sunburned with some serious mussle aches and if a pillow landed in front of the keyboard right now... I would already be asleep.
Thanks to everyone for making this an excellent event - cannot wait until next year!

I just wanted to say I had a great time and I will be there next year. I spent my days at the county park camping and now will be getting sand out of places the where sand shouldn't travel. I had one tired pup, Chevy slept the entire trip home. Lucky dog! What to do with these Peppermints.....

Man this just sucks that I missed this. I'm planning on making next years event and hope that work doesn't get in the way. Actually had this weekend off but after having been so long since I had one to myself there was way too much around the house that has been neglected. Hopefully also in the process of fixing that problem also.
So glad to hear that everyone had fun. It's always a blast going to one of these functions. Now lets see some pics in the photography forum from some of you that went.

I wanted to say thank you to everyone that helped with this event...a definite success...a big thank you to the sponsors for the wonderful raffle items! Bob Fenner for a very informative presentation...Steve and Cheri and those that helped behind the scenes. We had a great time...even my mother who is from Massachusetts enjoyed herself despite the heat she is very much not use to. She said she was having a hard time keeping up with us...my husband likes to go go go. She about fell over when she saw the length of the jetties, but she survived...only to whine for two days that her calves hurt LOL. When we were ready to leave the jetties we asked if she was ready to go and she said "no". It's addicting...sticking that little net in there and coming out with so many goodies.
I managed to catch a small butterfly fish, but I unfortunately didn't keep it apart from the shrimp and it looked as if they made a meal out of it overnight. It was by far the coolest thing I've caught, but it would have been nice to keep it alive a bit longer. Each trip we learn a little bit more
Thanks to everyone...looking forward to next year. That little blue heeler was a trip too...she's not afraid of anything. I wanted to bring my female Rottie when we first planned this, but wanted to stay in the same hotel so I decided against it. It wouldn't have worked out regardless because two weeks ago she was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma (cancer on her heart). This being after bone cancer two years ago. Maybe next year I'll bring one of the mixes. It's fun to watch the dogs enjoy the beach and water too.
