I picked up this frag from Aquarium Masters a couple months ago, and it was fresh trade in, so no ID was listed. (I grabbed it the same day it came in).

Sea Star: Bumps/Spikes are a sign that it is not reef safe.

Not sure what type it is, but I learned this when I added a chocolate chip to my reef when I was a noob...and I got schooled. Bumps= "Bad news for a reef". The star tore through my candy canes...an entire colony before I knew what was up.

It is a Spiny Sea Star / Echinaster echinophorus

If feeds on microorganisms and detritus and is very difficult to feed. It is reef safe but not with sessile inverts and doesnt do well in aquariums due to starvation and poor acclimation. Extra care should be taken to see that it eats or it wont last long.

Corals are sessile invertebrates. Compatibility with corals is the main determination of "reef safe". In practice, haitian red knobby sea stars are quite safe with corals and can be kept for many years in even small aquaria. They will eat sponges and unfortunately often succumb early to bacterial infection from mishandling along the distribution line.

I personally would not add that Sea Star to a reef and I would not clasify it as reef safe. But that's just me I guess.

I have no idea on the sea star, but the zoas look more like faded Green Bay Packers (http://www.zoaid.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=118) than Nuclear Greens (http://www.zoaid.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=2976) to me.

thanks guys, and I'll keep an eye on the star. So far it touched the clam, button polyps, star polyps, open brain, and the candy cane and turned away.
