one idea i have for a future tank setup is using a 100+gl water trough for a tidepool tank. the large grey tubs are great but are there some that are wider and larger? anyway have a couple of mangroves in a corner with live rock covering the sides and coming out of the water. it would only be a look down tank of course but it would be different.

Sounds cool! And you could collect locally so its low stocking cost. Good idea

Like the Rubbermaid agriculture stock tanks?

It would be neat to enclose it in plywood so you would not see the tub. Then tile the outside in a mosaic pattern. You could have a sitting area near/next to the tank built into the stand. Place a nice light pendant above it (or some cool metal halide spot lights) and it could be a unique setup.

Why a tub instead of a low profile tank (could be a custom build)?

Your idea sounds pretty cool!

Check out a Tractor Supply sometime, they have various types and sizes of tubs/water troughs. There are a few place online too. I know Tractor Supply used to have a round one that is about 8 feet in diameter and almost 2 feet tall. I always wanted to get one and set it up so I could have some larger fish in it. Depending on where you put it, you can also use a pond liner and shape it however you want. I think they make different color liners so it wouldn't have to be in black. There is a LFS in Houston that had a huge setup like that, I think they had some sharks in it too. I saw it several years ago and that got me thinking.

I would use a tub because it is cheaper. i was also thinking of 3 small (1-2gallon) surge devices for water movement. using three different pumps that would create random times to drop water into the pool. lighting would be solar tubes with small pendents for night viewing. this is all just a thought right now, i still have to get this past the wife but it may give someone else an idea for a future tank.

So....the water level of the tub would be at different levels throughout the day?

Only 3-6 gallons at one time. each one would fiill up at different rates causing them to dump at irregular intervals. it could happen one at a time up to all three dumping at the same time.
