I am getting patches of black on the sand bed in my display. does anyone know whqat that is? Do I need more flow, or what?

Post some pics if you could... It would help more experienced folk i.d. it. Could be a few things but without pics it's really hard to tell. Off the back I would guess cyano or dinoflagellates.

most likely dinoflagellates....not a good thing neither, it is extremely hard to get rid of if you have a full blown reef system. Not bad with softies or fish only.

I am have to do a water change because of some medication I was dosing anyway so I am doing a 25 %er in about an hour. Also going to run no lights today. They have been off since 11pm last night.

Is it greenish black with bubbles underneath it. If yes sorry don't know what it is. But I have gotten it with all my tanks when I state them up. Its in my sump right now.

it is black cyano bacteria, check out this creepy video of cyano under my microscope.

Where are you getting your water from? Have you tested your FW for phosphates? If you have a RO/DI setup, you may need to replace the sediment filter (looks like a paper towel roll), or the DI may need more.
Put some phosban in a filter sock and hang it in your sump (follow directions!) and it should subside quickly.

I don't know what kind it is, my husband bought it for me years ago. It says national on it..other than that I don't know.

What magnifications does it go up to? It should be made by National Optical...? It's pretty coollllllllllllllllllllll!
