I was thinking about adding a tang to my tank and am interested in some input on which one - if any would work.
The tank is a 215 gallon SPS dominant reef with a few LPS and zoanthids. I love my lobo and favites.
Current inhabitants are:
2 Picasso Clownfish
1 Coral Beauty
4 Pajama Cardinalfish
1 Scissor-tale goby
8 Blue Green Chromis
1 Four Line Wrasse- will most likely be relocated as soon as I can catch it.
2 Naked Clownfish in refugium - would like to move to main tank after wrasse move
What would you recommend for a tang.... small is preferred.

What about a sohal tang or a clown tang? I think they are so beautiful and a little less common.
Our prettiest tang is probably our powder blue.

How big do Powder Blue Tangs get? What is the best size to buy - larger or smallest? Very pretty!

My favorite is a Juvy Chevron. Very Docile as a juvy, not that aggresive as an adult. The best algae eater I have ever owned. Plus side, comes from Hawaii, ships very well, and shipped in a large bag. Negatives, rarely available.

My Powder Blue hasn't grown very quickly. I have had a juvenile Sohal grow up (to show size) while the Powder Blue has gone from 3" to 4". Powder Blues are beautiful, but also mean. Be prepared for the PB to be the boss of the tank and harass any new fish, but especially harass any other surgeonfish. If you are planning more than one surgeon, I would suggest adding them all at the same time. Just my thoughts.....

I would add a Powder Blue and a Purple at the same time, in fact I'll be doing just that with my tank next week when I have time to place an order online.

I've never actually owned one, but I've always been a big fan of Chevrons too. That would be my vote.

If you don't care too much about flashy colors, I love my scopas tang. He has been one of my better fish purchases.

My ideal tang would be one that stayed on the small side and was pretty hardy.... hate the idea of buying a fish to have it die a few days later. I run a UV sterilizer on my tank and do not really have the ability to quarantine so initial health would be a big concern.
I've got a $100 gift certificate to Drs Foster Smith for winning 3rd place in their November Photo Contest. Would ordering one from them be ok or would there be better luck getting one local?
I'm so confused - they are all so purdy!

What size is best when buying one? small or larger

I'd avoid an agressive tang, for now. Like a powder, sohol or clown. If you choose to add another tang later - and with your tank size you can have several - you will have a hard time adding it.
I have several tangs, and everyone comments on the orange shoulder. As a juvenile, it's yellow. Great fish, very personable, not too large, and not aggressive. I'd also consider a purple.

DFS would be a great place to buy the fish, especially out of their Divers Den, they have some great looking healthy fish there. It would be the only place I would buy a fish other than somewhere local.

I like Bill's suggestion. I would also even consider a Chocolate tang, it does well with multiple tangs and makes for a nice show piece.
To answer your question...Small or Large...I would go large. Larger tangs seem to be more hardy in my experience (provided they are going into a large tank) and you have plenty of room.

The Chevron is a beautiful tang......don't know how well they ship, but I believe they also eat a particular algae. Tennenti is another one I believe it stays on the smaller scale. My favorite is the Dussumieri, he is on the larger scale, but we got this one about 2 to 3 yrs. ago at around 5" to 6". He has such a personality.

I pushed the order button for liveaquaria.com and will hopefully have some live and healthy tangs coming in next week. I ordered a Powder Blue tang and Desjardini Tang. Hope they do well in the tank. :) Thank you for all your help. I'll keep you posted on how they do when they arrive.

UPDATE:
The order from liveaquaria came in.... minus 1 of the 2 fish I ordered. The sailfin tang is on backorder.
I added a Kole tang a week ago today knowing that the Desjardini Tang was not shipping. B&B had a really nice looking one in stock. The Powder Blue showed up on Tuesday. No agression between the tangs and everyone is doing really well. My Coral Beauty tried to be the boss for all of 2 seconds with the Powder Blue. I am running my UV sterilizer and it has helped to keep the dreaded ich from popping up.
I am really happy with the Powder Blue from Drs Foster & Smith. Once in the tank it immediately settled in and was feeding off the rock. I hope to add a Orange Shoulder this week and get the Desjardini Tang in as well.
Thanks for all the imput!!!! Tangs are addicting!

Good luck with the new fish! I own a powder blue and yelllow tang. They like to box each other a little but nothing serious. I prefer the powder.
