well looks like im going to bite the bullet sooner or later .... I did notice my tank got up to about 82ish yesterday and i didn't like it. I can only imagine what summer temps are going to be like and i don't want to have to freeze my house all day long because my tank will get to hot so i figured might as well get a chiller.... :at_wits_end:

basically i have a 90g tank and about 24g down below lots of rock so a lot less water then what im claiming in a sense

what brand?? price?? and were to find a great deal besides maast lol ...

i have only seen one in the last month go up for sale so yea ....

I've kept a fan blowing on my sump or surface of display tank and that has helped keep temp down.

For about $20 at Altex you can buy 2 80mm or 120mm computer fans with good CFM (Which you can even get the fans with leds in them) and a 120V ac to 12V dc converter and wire them together and creativly mount them on your sump or you can do the same to the surface water of or main tank or what the heck do it to both or I can make it for you and sell it to you today. If you need help message me.

I have this guy stuffed in my canopy blowing across the top of the water. It was $39 at wall mart.I have it tied to a temp controller. on if temp is above 77.8 off if below that temp.I have three 400w halides with actinics and my sump is lit with 4 36" t5's. I keep the ac at 78, every once & awhile 77. Works like a charm

That fan is a monster. Must have huge topoff requirements. Nice you can get away without a chiller.
I, unfortunately, have three chillers.
On the 214gal is a 1/2hp Deltastar
On the 115gal is a 1/4hp Current Prime
On the 34gal is a 1/10hp Current Prime.

I think chiller is the way to go. There have been many stories about failed a/c and loss of tanks.

to be honest im jw how well this will all work in the summer time .... it might work well right now with temps at 75-80ish outside but when we get a 95+ day i think my tank will be hurting

+ i dont want to have to have my a/c on 70 or lower all day( when im not home) for my fish tank (im not a baller like some of these reefers) aka gary lol inside joke

You would likely need a 1/4hp.
Think there have been a few on RC lately.

It measures about 11" by 11" so your stand or canopy has to be big enough to hide it.Or you could get creative with a cabinet or something placed next to the tank to hide the fan.I have the fan running on hi speed and all I hear is the sound of the airflow not the motor. My Ato is on a timer not a float switch. been running this way for about 2 years now.Didnt notice a significant increase in ato demand with the fan.My ac did take a dump on the 3rd of july this year. No problem with tank overheating because my lights are also tied to the temp controller and they turned off when temp went above 82.

or get a dorm fridge gut it put the cooling coils in the sump n u have a diy chiller. or get a dorm fridge a lot of tubing coil it up put it in the fridge get a small pump to pump water from sump through the coiled tubing cooling it before it goes back into the sump.

just ideas I have when the little mouse starts turning his wheel. I have not tried these ideas so if u try them try them at ur own risk I am not responsible for the bad out comes but if it works then it was my idea.

I still think my idea is the cheapest and almost positive to drop at least 2-3 degrees and you will not have to spend $200+. Tell me what cha think.

no no I think mine is the best idea. j/k lol. not only will it lower the temp but u could put fish food in the freezer part and keep ur phyto in there also.

my idea calls for vinyl tube

when I was at the wall mart buying the fan I was also scoping out thier personal ac units.I think they were less than a hundred bucks. I thought about stuffing one of those in my canopybut went with the fan instead

Would've had trouble anyways. You'd have to find out a way to route the condensation from the window unit into a drain or outside. Not to mention those copper cooling coils on the unit would corrode up from the salt.

why didn't I think of that. u could freeze beer bottle n put them in the sump to defrost then u could drink them when they melted a bit. good one, I like that one.
