Did I make a good buy? Well, when it comes in, I will have to learn how to use it :). Does anyone have any pointers?:photo:

David,
I saw your text very late. I have the XSi. I am no expert but they are good cameras. Lenses are the key. For the corals you will want the Canon 100mm macro lens, but will set you back about the cost of the kit you bought.
i will call you later today.

Yeah, I changed my mind 4 times before I settled on that lens. The Len's Image Stabilizer was was the "Selling Point".

I've got the same camera (different kit lens) and I rather like it. I'm still learning how to use it though.

I have that lens on my canon 40D. It a pretty good lens. Just be sure if you get a macro and really want to get a close up pic dont forget to get the extension tube for it. That will really give you a close up picture.

OK, It looks like I will be buying the "Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens". Is that the one you all recommend? I can probably buy it for around $350 Used.... Correction $400 if I'm lucky. :D

Enlighten me please. Where do I find this "Extension Tube" you speak of? Is it applicable for the type of Macro Lens I plan on purchasing?

You will not find a bad write up on that lens. I wish I had time to take full advantage of mine. The extension tube is not needed and actually not recommended by canon, though some people use them. The is a hood you can get to reduce glare and many filters. A good polarizing filter is a good idea, will protect the lens also.

That is correct not needed but if you plan on using the macro on other things like outdoors and photographing nature up close you'll be surprised on what you can get and how far away you were or how close you got. Say you wanted to focus on a butterfly and wanted to capture the markings on the wings or eyes you don't have to get so close and risk the chance of it flying away. But not needed like stated above.
A good polarizing filter is a good idea, will protect the lens also.
second this be sure you get you filter or filters for it will come in handy.

OK, other than a polarized filter, what other filters do you all recommend. I'm shooting for a total of 5 or so.
And thanks to all for the birthday greetings. :D

The Canon Lens came in today. WOW!!! Oh-Chee-Momma, That's One Big Lens. I guess that's a normal reaction when you've been using Point-N-Shoot Digital Camera's your whole life. The Camera Body,Memory Card, & other Goodies will be here Tomorrow (Tuesday) ... Um... Later on today :D.

First get this filter (cheap and good) to protect the lens. Not sure what size you need.

Then start playing. Htere are many many choices. I am, for the most part, a rookie and still have not learned a whole lot about my XSi.
The lenses I have:
1. The canon kit lens: 18-55 IS actually does a decent job for everyday.
2. Canon EF 70-300 zoom usm 1:4-5.6 IS
3. Canon 100mm macro EF 1:2.8 USM

the filter size for that one is a 72mm. all you have to look at is the lens and it will say there.

Don't skimp on your filter or you will turn a great lens into a so so lens really fast. I don't even bother with them on my cheaper lenses, but once I put some real money into lenses for my new camera a good UV filter will pretty much stay on there for protection purposes.
Happy belated birthday to ya.

Congrats on the new camera and happy belated b-day!
I'm in agreement with brewercm, cheap filters can degrade image quality and the way I look at it is if you're making a serious investment in a nice camera you should either use a good filter or none at all under normal conditions. If you're going to be someplace where you truly need protection you can always attach a cheap filter for protection. For the record I don't use filters for protection purposes but I understand and accept the risk in not doing so.
Re: lens size, it really is a big change if you're used to point and shoots but I'm sure you'll appreciate the fast response time and excellent quality once you get comfortable with the gear.

Update:
Just Ordered The Canon UV Filter. Working on the "Canon 72mm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter". The least expensive I've found it was for $120 shipped. It's not even a lens. Yikes!!!
