There is so much personal preference here... Keep an eye out, every couple of weeks someone seems to do a group buy at Drs. Foster & Smith. IO is $32 delivered, Reef Crystals is around $34 delivered, when 9 buckets are purchased. Look over on the "Group Buy" forum.

IO is the best and has the longest proven track record. All these others add a bunch of extra junk to it so as to market to consumers. Salt is salt, extra junk is extra junk.

I use Red Sea Coral Pro in all the tanks. I have had good success with it.
However, I think any of the major salt mixes would be fine. The important thing is the consistency of the water, Routine water changes, good skimming, etc.
here is a link I have posted before comparing all the major sysnthetic sea salts:

Reef Crystals is now $47 plus shipping @ Dr. F&S. I would look locally now, AD on San Pedro maybe?

Wow... Yeah... wasn't it just ~$33 per bucket on your group buy not that long ago.

petsolutions.com had a sale on it recently...may still be on sale. Shipping isn't bad...they don't charge for the extra weight anymore. They have decent prices on other items as well and when I order on a monday I always get it by Friday. I've bought dry goods from them for years and have never had a problem. Everything from reptile, dog and fish supplies.

I just looked there: IO @ 38, RC @ 41 & Red Sea @ 42 shipping does not look bad as long as you buy a lot.

Instant Ocean certainly isn't the best salt out there, not even close. Here's a link to a salt study done by one of the local enthusiasts (who happens to be a chemist) back in Michigan if you're interested.
