The one on the left really looks like my condy when the light just come on. well... i think i have a condy. got me wondering now...
RayAllen
Thu, 13th Nov 2008, 12:08 PM
well it could be H crispa as i mentioned above or H Malu aka Delicate anemone both have verrucae but H Malus are longitudial rows

Thu, 13th Nov 2008, 12:10 PM
your getting warmer!! it is Heteractis
RayAllen
Thu, 13th Nov 2008, 12:13 PM
Ok then it could be H Magnifica aka Magnificent sea anemones because the only other Heteractis that I know of is H Aurora and its definatley not that one, lol.
And all that I listed are in my book "Anemone Fishes and their Host Sea Anemones" Great book that gives awesome descriptions and info. Pictures are cool too.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a Winner BOB! The purple one really looks like H. Crispa or an LTA and I wouldn't rule that out.. but THE base and mouth says H. Magnifica which is what i bought them as.
RayAllen
Thu, 13th Nov 2008, 12:22 PM
The purple one really through me off. But once you said Verrucae i knew I had to be one of the Heteractis. Very nice score, they are beautiful especially once matured. Liveaquaria has some for sale now but they dont look that pretty.

Yeah, I took a chance on these and let them ship me what they had,, they came in looking pretty good, but it will still be a day or two before i really can tell if they are gonna make it. the purple one was not wanting to stick so i set it inside a small ring of PVC and i think he is attached now. my camera skills are bad, these guys are really colorful!

Mike according to my reading they can grow up to 3ft in the wild and half that in the aquarium. Thats 1.5 ft which would make for a really cool display but if you have any coral they will be smotherd. Im assuming after all the problems/mishaps you dont have many corals left.
Texreefer
Thu, 13th Nov 2008, 12:48 PM
I have plenty of corals.. however if he makes it that big, the corals will be moved or removed as needed.. the trick is getting him to survive first

Ritteri huh. plz post plenty of pics because they always look incredibly in the store and almost dead. It will be interesting to see what they look like when happily settled into an aquarium.

Sorry to burst your bubble but those are not magnificas..they are M. Doreensis. They both look just like my M. Doreensis. H. Magnificas tentacles do not get that long. They have finger like tentacles that look like they have swollen tips. Their verrucae is not white, it is a darker color then the color of their foot. Those are no way in any shape or form a magnifica.

Was wondering how long it would take someone to say this!
I have actually already determined that and have emailed the shipper to work out a refund and ship them back.

Mike thats why my first guess was H Crispa. M. Doreensis and H Crispa are very similar in characteristics. H Magnificas tends to also stay a bit closed up a lot of the time from what ive read and the pics ive seen.
Hope they dont give you to much of a problem with the return.

Why would you ship them back? They are very nice even if they aren't the anemones you wanted. M.Doreensis can be kept with other anemones. So if you do so happen to find a healthy H. Magnifica you can keep it with the Doreensis. One reason is the Doreensis stays in the sand and the Magnifica likes to be high on the rocks.

I already have 2 bubble tips, now two M. Doreensis. That may be too many anemones. plus I paid a Lot of money for what should be a Ritteri. a Ritteri is twice the price of a Doreensis

so Here is how it all went down. when they came in this morning I had my doubts about them, especially the purple tenticled one( never have seen a Ritteri with purple tents,,) anyway, the other was shrunk up pretty tight and looked very much like a ritteri so I was optimistic.. I took pics and posted them to see what kind of Honest reactions i would get. In the mean time they had opened up a bit in the tank and as I inspected them, It became very clear right away that they were not Ritteri.. You guys just gave me the assurance i needed... I have been calling and emailing them since shortly after posting pics this morning to tell them how much they suck for not being able to identify their own livestock and so far no contact:thumbs_down:.. looks like I might me out of luck on this deal. I have two overpriced anemones that I cant even get my money back if I sold them here because they are Not worth $50 a piece.. live and learn i guess

Ouch, live and learn is right. Most places sale them for $24-$29.99 so they took you for a spin.

Heres the one I just bought marked M Doreensis on the bag by the distributor for Indonesia. (Alamo Aquatics got their shipment in today and I bought it straingt out of the box). Im pretty positive that it is a M Doreensis from the description in my book and the internet.

Thanks its a decent size. The bright purple one you have I do think is M Doreensis but the lighter one still looks more like H Magnifica to me. If you could see my book in person you would see why I say that.

Horrible pics but its the best I could do taking pics of a book, lol. The close up of the anemone is H Magnifica and your lighter one reminds me more if it for sure. Short stumpy tentacles with white/light tips

thats what I thought at first too. now it is fully expanded and its tenticals are about 4" long and the Verrucae are not the right color.. look at yours, it has a white ish band around the top of the base where the Verrucae are.. Magnificas don't have that.. Theirs are a darker color of the base color.. that, and the long tents is why I know they are both M Doreensis.. I am working with a guy at Marine Depot to get a Maroon base Magnifica,,, Maybe Monday if they come in

I've had it for over 2 years now. Can hardly believe it. The main problem I have with these types of anemones is that they are almost impossible to ID correctly. Some days I wake up and wear it's a plain old LTA. Research has convinced me that it was ID'd correctly at purchase. My first one came in with a beautiful orange/red foot. An employee at the store thought he could split it, it died at the shop. This was a replacement.
I still really like this anemone.

Just a foot long orangeish/pinkish tube anemone. About 3" diameter tube. Before it settled in the crown was about a foot diameter. I can't figure out the exact 50/50 purple-white and green mouth area.

That is not true..( maybe for the brown and green ones its true) The purple one is definitely worth more than $50 even at that size. I paid over $50 + shipping for my purple M Doreensis and it was only the size of a golf ball when it came to me. Now that my purple M. Doreensis is huge, over 18inches in diameter, it is worth no less than $150.
BTW..nice purple footed Magnifica :)
I see that you are selling the LTAs..Don't short yourself on the purple one it is worth way more than $30. If I had room for another LTA I would pay $50 for that purple one.
RayAllen
Fri, 14th Nov 2008, 11:29 AM
Im sure everyone has their own prices. I paid 29.99 for my purple one and its the size of a soft ball.
Mike I see you bit the bullet and are letting them go. Post when you get the anemone you actually wanted.

Ah yes now I'm feeling it.
Rumor has it Mike that they are beyond difficult to keep alive. I even think I recall being bashed apart on this very same forum for having bought said anemone. Was cussed around for having bought an anemone that nobody can keep alive and the posters felt that I was an especially poor reefer.
Thank goodness that kind of mentality has died down. Best of luck with yours. I should bring mine down and see if they make babies.

Fri, 14th Nov 2008, 08:03 PM
I agree that it is a very difficult species to keep alive... so were simple saltwater fish years ago... I have been reefing for close to 20 years and this is the FIRST one i have tried because of the level of difficulty.. this hobby is about advancing husbandry of these animals and I believe my setup is stable enough, large enough, has enough light, etc. I would not recommend this anemone to anyone,, I know you were not chastising me,, I just wanted to give some background and reasoning.. hopefully my experience will be enough
