View Full Version : What do you do with RO/DI waste-water?

I've heard some recent talk of low/no waste RO/DI systems. I'm about to go do some research, but am not planning to invest in a new system any time soon. In the meantime, what does everybody do with your RO/DI waste water?
I'm embarrassed to say that I currently feed the yellow line from my Spectrapure out onto the driveway, and want to stop this wasteful practice. We have a sprinkler system for the lawn, and don't have plants to water, so those two obvious options are out for me..

Mine goes straight to the drain pipe in the laundry room, haven't figured out how to get the drain line all the way out to the yard yet and I'm not carrying buckets around because I'd forget and overfill the buckets anyway.

I was under the impression that RO/DI wastewater was high in salts and such and would be less than ideal for plant use.

I run mine into a 55g drum and with a mag9 pump it to the washer for clothes that use cold water. supposedly it makes the clothes fade faster but i have not noticed this to be true. i don't like the term "waste" water.

All good suggestions (esp the washer)! I'm taking notes, as am determined to recycle...

Be careful about using it to refill the washer. I let the hose go straight into the washer and forgot. It overflowed when I left the house.

I sell mine to Ozarka and they resell it to the public as "Spring Fed Natural Water"

You might be thinking about water softener excrement. I believe RO wastewater is far purer than tap water. That is, if your are using a couple of pre-filters.

Not to counter the Bird here, but not all "wate water" from an RO unit is safe for drinking. I would stick with water the plants outside and such, washer is also a good idea. But if you are running from a well versus city water, I would avoid it (and drinkning it).
