I've been all over lower MI attempting to find shops just to look around at. Every one of them I went to was long gone out of business. Several of them had already become other shops. "Extreme Petz" was the absolute biggest joke I've ever walked into. They had a nice chalk basslet and a 2" piece of GSP. They claim to be the areas largest salt water shop.

So yeah after driving to 10 listed shops and only finding 1 that was actually in business, I've concluded that we have it easy in our area.

If you think the economy is bad, just move up here for awhile.

Have you ventured to any LFS in the greater Detroit area? I haven't been to any on the western or central part of the state yet. Tropicorium, Fish Doctors in Canton (nice little hole in the wall by my work), and Kees are pretty nice. Kee's is out in Shelby Twp which is about an hour north from me. Tropicorium is in Romulous by the Detroit Metro Airport and thats about 10 min from me. There are a few others in the area that I have only briefly gone through once so I'm not sure what their track record may be.

I really wouldn't up here. The economy has sucked up here for much longer than this 'credit crunch' we are dealing with now. It just compounds things up here. There's a reason why those stores are closing..... Only the stores on top of their game will survive IMO.

I almost went out there last weekend. I'm gonna wait a week or two to make my trip worthwhile. Looking at getting a few frags and a nanostream up there

Yeah, there's only one store in southwest Michigan worth going to, Mother's Reef in Parchment. If you feel like making a trip about an hour north to the Grand Rapids area hit up Aquarium Services/Blue Fish Aquarium in Jenison. If you make it up there tell 'em that Jason sent you up from Texas! I used to work there, it really is the nicest shop in the area. Best prices, too. I'm actually still buying all of my stuff from them and getting it shipped down here, since Corpus is the pits for this hobby. Pruess Pets in Lansing is pretty awesome, but it's the only shop in the area, so it's quite literally a "zoo," and it can be pretty pricey since they have zero competition.

I'm home now. That Preus looks nice but would have been a 2 hours drive. We did consider heading to Lansing. No LS we never made it East to Detroit. A little to close to All Hallows Eve to be near Detroit. I'm in the fire protection business, not the put out random house fires business. Any good fires this year?

Couldn't find any info on Mother's. We checked phone books and random "fish store" type online searched but came up empty for any fish stores. We did visit some bad pet shops and asked if there were any good LFS and they all said no. We drove all around Parchment. Too bad nobody mentioned it to us.

Lonestar really hit the head on the nail with what he said about the stagnated economy. This was mentioned at a "pet store" to us "Round here we eat fish, we don't buy them to keep".

Try being here in South Dakota! ONE store that has saltwater fish.....2 small tanks with MAYBE a total of 6 fish. Petco just opened up here, but they are still getting there tanks straight as they lost most of there stock to a tank crash already. Other than them, it's all online ordering for me.

on line is not such a bad choice and much better than petco.
