Are filter socks supposed to hang above the water? Mine is on an attachment that hangs on the side of my sump. The lip of the sock is only 3 inches above the water. Also, is there a way to quiet the gurgling water sound coming from the pipe?

I've seen them either way. Both should work. What kind of overflow do you use? Thats probably a source from the gurgling. If the overflow is not setup right it can force the air bubble downwards towards the end of the pipe (filter sock area).

To kill off the splashing I put PVC pipe going all the way down with a T fitting that the upper lip is just barely above the water line, this quieted it down quite a bit and stopped the salt creep from all the splashing from creeping out of the sump.

I have durso overflows. The sound is not coming from the overflows it is coming from the pipe above the filter sock. I will try using the tee fitting.

Jacob, do your dursos have tubing in them? The sound you are getting is air that has traveled all of the way down the drain then burps with the water as it exits. You want a piece of semi-rigid tubing (like the plastic RO tubing (that goes thru the hole in your durso, and extends past where your overflow comes in. I like my drains to be slightly below water level.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. Thats why I asked what type of overflow we are dealing with. If you don't have the tubing like Bill mentioned, I'd try that first and see if that gurgling noise stops.

It does have the tubing. I'm talking about the splashing noise as the water exits the tubing.

If you have a dual drain in your overflow, look up the "Herbie" standpipe and drain system on Reef Central. Basically you have a siphon and use a gate valve to control the flow. I set this up on my 180 and have ZERO noise from either end. The only thing you can hear in my living room is the skimmer and the CL pump...

My filter has to be cleaned every 3 days now. 200 microns is too efficient for me. What size socks do you guys use? I found a site that sells different sizes for $2.50 each. I was thinking around 50 to 100 micron size bag. The smaller the micron number the larger the gaps in the filter right?

Jacob, I believe that the the larger the number, the larger the holes...

I use 300 micron and have to clean every 5 or so. My tank is still new so hopefully it will slow down a little. The 100u I would have to clean every 3 days but they sure would polish the water...

Is anyone in the killeen area interested in doing a group order on those socks on that site with me?

I'll get in on a group order, I live in Georgetown but work on Fort Hood. In fact, if anyone from Georgetown/Austin/Round Rock/Pfluegerville is interested in getting in on this I can transport down to Austin from Killeen.

Jroescher you clean them by turning them inside out and throwing them in your washing machine.

Hey Jroescher, love your tank page! I especially love the recessed Reefkeeper 2 controller in the hood (LOVE the hood hinged to the wall!!) and the view of your refugium... Schweeeeet stuff, man!

How do you clean the socks?

Pull it inside out and wash it in the washer (without detergent) then let air dry...that's it

I was about to post a question asking how to clean filter socks. Good thing I looked first. I would have never thought about putting it in the washing machine.

i've had many filter socks and filter sock holders in the past.

unless your sump happens to be the right height for the filter sock holder to sit on, then they suck.
I've had best results w/ having the filter sock about 3-4 inches above the water line and angled inwards toward the inside of the sump, so that when it fills up it doesn't spill onto your floor. honestly, i would try and ditch the filter sock holder and use a piece of string connecting it somehow to the filter sock ring and your good. ill try and post a pic of mine later so you can see. or pm me.
hope that helps. trust me i know exactly what your talking about. they are really really loud if your not using it properly.
