Hey guys! Well I've posted quite a bit the past week or so. I had some questions about lighting, frags, and water parameters. Here are some pics of my tank. I have had this tank running almost 2 years. In the process I have had some corals "wither" away and have recently done 2 gal water changes weekly and started adding coralvite as well as trying to stablize my PH which now sits at 7.9 no matter how much dkh buff I put in there. Well comments are accepted. Enjoy!

coralline doesn't necessarily like too much light and keep your dKH at 12 and flow up. a couple pieces of rubble with coralline couldn't hurt to seed your tank.

i guess i had it backwards...i was wanting to add more, lol. my tank is a 20 high and i started with 10 lbs. live, 10 plain jane white. the live rock came with pink, purple, green, even orange growth. but it isn't spreading. also, its only been like 2 months. but i think at least a little growth would be expected.

Put a powerhead aimed at your live rock so it blows it towards your base rock. Also, try scraping some of the coralline off your live rock so it falls on the base rock.

I'm using Kent DKH Superbuffer. Those small green daisies are new Aussie softies.

"Knopia octocontacanalis. Exploratory dive, Great Barrier Reef

It looks like an impressionist painting of a field of daisies, but these are actually animals, the polyps of a soft octocoral, living some 12 metres beneath the sea near Port Douglas, Australia. The genus Knopia was first described only in January 2007 and is named after German marine biologist Daniel Knop, who supplied the type specimen. Knopia octocontacanalis is the only current member of the genus." Flickr.com

The small one I saw was in the tank where he keeps the "apples" and the big one was in the big tank behind his desk or right next to his desk (same thing). Just ask him for daisies. That's what he calls them.

hey man what's up. i went by A.M.'s to pick up those daisies in the tank behind the desk. but they were more purple than blue. what kind of light were you using, are yours the same type? i just wanted to make sure they were the same ones before i dropped that change.

Funny question, I thought they looked different as well. I have a 70watt MH (Astralux) double ended bulb and thats it. I think the daisies he has now are like brownish purple and long. Mine are shorter and kinda look more like gsp. Its a simple little coral but looks nice and different.

Quick question....I know most nano cube, bio cube, and aquapod peeps swap out their return pumps. On my aquapod I put a Rio pump pushing 350gph. With this my display is fills faster than the overflow. So the back gets low while the display still looks full. Is there a trick to getting the overflow to flow faster or something? Thanks.

You would have to enlarge the hole(s) for the drain on the false wall. They sound like they are not big enough to keep up the with extra flow.

What he said^^^.

I would've gone with a MJ900. I think they run at like 8 or 9 watts so they wouldn't produce very much heat. Also, with the 6025 in there you shouldn't really even be all that concerned about getting alot of flow from the return pump. In fact, slower is better.

Thanks guys. I pulled one of the baffles off the overflow and it immediately leveled it out.

In other news I am working on upgrading to T5 lighting. I am looking at the Current Sundial or Nova Extreme - both are 4 x 24 watt. This would mean I have remove the 70w MH. What do you guys think? I have mainly soft corals and a couple SPS (thanks Glenn).

Honestly, if you're looking to upgrade your lighting I would go with a 150w mh over the T-5's. You would have to go with 18w T5's to have them properly fit over your 20" wide tank. Not only would the wattage be quite a bit lower, but I'm pretty sure there isn't much of a selection of 18w T5 lamps yet.

If you did go ahead and go with the 24w'ers I would think about doing a 6 bulb combo. The tank is fairly deep top to bottom and I'm not sure that the 4 bulb combo would be enough light even if you replaced the stock bulbs from either fixture (which you would absolutely HAVE to do for your tank). 6 bulb fixtures can be pretty pricey. Once you start to get into that range you might as well go halide.

get yourself a 150w sunpod, stick a phoenix 14k in that sucker, and call it a day!!!

my 2 pennies.
