Does Corralline grow on the sand bed? I have this purple layer of "stuff" growing on my sandbed. On Monday I vaccumed it up and today it's back. Good or bad?

Its called Cyno bacteria and its not a good thing, but is common.

is it purple or brown....if its brown thick algea most likley its diatom algae...

if its Cyno bacteria it mostly feeds of phosphates...so maybe use a filter media that can remove phosphates
and diatom aglae...feeds of silicates... sometimes if you buy cheap salt it has traces of silicon...wich is used to remove moisture from packaging....

i never use tap water....this may sound crazy but i literaly bought about 50 gallons of R.O water from walmart...and lugged it back to my house....and ive never had any of these problems........

I buy my water from a LFS so it shouldn't be the water. What else can I do to get rid of it?

Honestly...nothing other than water changes. Just keep vacuuming it off your sand bed and it will eventually pass. We all had to go through an algae bloom on our tanks.

Increasing the water flow in the areas where cyno is growing can stop or slow it down.

Regardless of the source of our water, it needs to be tested to ensure quality. Quality can not be assumed from any source.

I test my water every week and all the levels are great.

increase water flow, reduce phosphates, get clean up crews members to eat it.

That was my next question...can my CUC eat it? The reason I ask this is, this morning it was all gone!! I know it will probably be back by this evening but that's weird that it disappears over night! :hypnotyized:

it went away at night because the lights were off. Sometimes it's just a faze and there's not much you can do aside from maintaining it until your tank stabalizes itself. I never had any, then moved and coudln't get it to go away. It's slowly going away though.

I'ved used chemi clean before with great results. Didn't harm anything else in my tank.
