Noisy Overflow Need Advice

Well, I just finished all the plumbing on the Oceanic 180 and filled it up and turned on my return pump.

Here are the specs:

Oceanic 180 RR
Two overflows in each corner
Durso in each overflow
Mag 9.5 Return pump (I suspect with the height, it is pushing a little over 700GPH, thus ~4x going through my sump)

I was amazed at how loud it was. It isn't from the Durso pipe, as they're pretty silent, just hear a slight hum as air pass through it. The noise is from the sump and as a result of the water entering it. What are some techniques to reduce this?

I also have another question related to the return pump. I've previously owned Mag 5 and Mag 7 pumps and they each had a base attached. The Mag 9.5 I received (brand new from Drs F & S) doesn't have a base. Is it good to have it sitting directly on the bottom of the glass sump? It seems from the vibrations and how it is positioned, it moves itself around slightly and when just right increases the noise as it vibrates off the glass. How do others use the Mag 9.5? Do you put something under it to provide a buffer?

Lets start with the pump. Mags are great. Ive used anything from a Mag 3 to the 18, you must have something underneath them. Right now under my Mag I have a peice of foam but you could use a mouse pad.

As for the water splashing id extend the pipe into the water or ad filter socks but you really do not need the 90s you have. You can also ad foam on the inside of the door to cut down on sound coming from everything in the stand.

When you say foam, what type of foam?

Like sponge foam? Or Styrofoam?

Its funny, some of the mags come with a stick on foam piece to put on the bottom and some dont. Wither way, you need it. The Durso's look fine. I wouldnt extend the pump under the water. I have found sometimes that if it is underwater, there is an "ant-siphon" that occurs so that with a power failure, upon power coming back on, water will overfill the tank and overflow instead of draining normally. If that makes sense.

Yes I did have the problem initially, but on the 90 degree fitting for my returns, I drilled a small hole. When the pump shuts off, this small hole breaks the siphon. So no worries thus far. I also did test it with where I plan to have my loc line. It only fills my sump up about half way. The main issue is the noise from the water exiting the drain lines in the sump. I will try to extend them into the water, but I'm worried I will then get a gurgling / bubbling effect. Do I extend it just under the water surface or almost to the bottom of the tank?

I would drill 2 small holes instead of one just incase a snail block it and over time coraline algea would block it too. This is what, i would do to the drains for anti gurling ,noise and bubling. Use a T-fitting some pvc pipe and a drill end cap. Sorry for the bad drawing, hope you get it.

What aquasport has drawn up should work. Basically a durso as well. You can see on his drawing he also entered a peice of airline tubing in the top to let it burp.

The piece of airline tubing needs to go down the durso, just past the elbow. You should do this on all of your dursos, as it keeps a lot of air from flowing down into the sump, too. This makes it easier to "burp", rather than drag all that air down with the water.

Bill, so on my overflow durso, the airline tubing end should be just above the water flow or in it?
