Hi
I recently moved from Denver and had to tear down my 155gal bowfront reef. It was a very sad day but I am getting ready to set things up again! I recently had a pretty scary electric bill ($550). I am sure some of that was my pool and AC which isn't working well. How much do most people in San Antonio spend on electricity or electricity for their tank?

I would also welcome any good LFS rec's on where to buy live rock and sand at reasonable prices. I usually start my tanks with lots of small frags and enjoy watching them grow. I could mail order but would rather support an LFS if their prices are competitive.

Many thanks

Welcome to MAAST! And welcome to San Antonio. You will find this site incredibly useful, many helpful people here who would be more then happy to assist you with anything. I'm not too sure about the electricity, but as far as LFSs:

I love both B&B aquatics and Phenomenal Aquatics (Also called Wolf Reef).

If you are looking for LR, Phenomenal Aquatics is where I would go. I bought some great rock for $2 a pound dry, and for some very nice live rock, only $3 a pound. B&B is a great all around store, and will offer amazing customer service, they will always help you out. Look in our sponsors section, they are all good stores to check out. Another popular store is Aquarium Designs, I've never been there actually, but I've seen some very nice things from them. You will find incredible frag deals all over this forum.

There is a meeting at Bass Pro shops on the 28th, I think it is 2-4. This would be a great opportunity for you to meet some of the people of this organization.

Good luck,
If you ever need help, ask.

welcometo texas. This summer CPS charged both arms and legs for electricity. my bills from june to now have been $200 and change, and I have 55gal with 216w T5, a stay home wife and daughter and a 62" Tv on almost the whole day. So it's kinda hard to determine the real amount of electricity used from the hoby and your life style. I think that I had a posting about how to find out how much wattage is used by the tank and appliances back in June, and Lonestar had a link from Reefcentral which was helpul. I cannot copy & Paste but look for a posting "$200 Electricity bill after T5fixture"
If you're looking for rocks Ed @ Wolf Reef always has great deals. You can also go to Aquarium Designs and Jason will take care of you.
Once again welcome and if you need chaetomorpha I'm giving some out now,and will be giving them out monthly

If you are going to live in San Antonio, City Public Service is going to be your electric & gas company. Here is a link to their rates for each:

Welcome to SA and MAAST (I am originally from Denver too). It would be good to put your location (NW San Antonio), therefore someone can recommend a good LFS near you.

We get many of our frags (and fish) from people selling on MAAST in the "For Sale / Trade" section. This gives us a chance to see some of the great tanks in the SA area. All the LFS mentioned above are great as well.

Good luck.

i have a 2k sq/ft house and my electric bill was $190 last month, and $130 this month. im single but i keep it very comfortable when im home with a programmable thermostat. i have a single 250w MH over a 30 cube and guess i spend < $50 annually on electricity for my tank.

welcome to SA and to MAAST, hope to see you at the next meeting!
