Help. I have a 125 gallon aquarium. We have been invaded by a red slime. It covers everything. We have added a water jet to increase circulation. We have replaced all the filter pads, washed the filter input, washed the water jet, siphoned the bottom and rocks, replaced about 1/2 the water, cut back on feeding, etc. It is coming back again. Any suggestions.

I'm in the same boat as you. Have you tried blacking the tank out for a day or two? I heard that helps kill it back.

How large is your clean up crew? Have you tested for phosphates and nitrates? How much total flow do you have in your tank? You should buy a filter sock and some phosban and see if that helps. If not you could use Chemi-Clean; alot of people use it with great results.

how old is the tank? if it is relatively new going through a cycle of cyano is fairly normal

The tank is not but about 3 months old. The filter system I have is a combination canister filter/skimmer. I think it is a Tom. I can't remember the name. I have a maxi jet 1200 to add water flow. Clean up crew is low. I will be adding some snails this week as soon as they come in. I test weekly. Everything is in range for the test kit that I have. It does not test for phosphates.

wait it out, syphon as much as you can get out when you do your water changes. if you are not using RO/DI you need to. otherwise, you are going through what 99% of us already have.

A lot of stores are selling ro/di water. I prefer the stores that sell only water but if you go to one of the vending machines in Walmart or some other store, keep an eye out for the last servicing. Most machines have it done once a month. By the end of that time period, it is basically tap water.

You can also try Chemiclean red slime remover, but after that you need to start use ultra pure water for topoff and water changes or no telling what you are introducing into your tank.
