Im pretty new to marine tanks, I mean ive worked at pet stores and done a lot of typical maintenace for people, but I dont know exactly what to do with this problem.

My tank, over the course of like 2 days got completly covered (mostly on the glass) with brown fuzz type algae. I scraped it off, well as much as I could with a glass scraper and waited a bit, then cleaned out my filter system really good to get most out of the water.

Its not a new tank, I got it used from someone that takes good care of what they have so im sure its something I am doing wrong.

Heres some info about the tank, hopefully someone can correct it for me.

Its a 29 gallon standard demension tank with 2-3 inches of sand, probably 10-15 pounds of live rock, a few snails, a few blue leg hermits, feather dusters, xenia, some marine plants (not positive what they all are but one IS culerpa) and some random other things growing that Im not positive what their identity is.

I run a marineland 280 filter rated for 50 gallons, a decent protien skimmer, I had a heater but took it off because of lighting, and a (not sure what brand) 900 powerhead. The tanks at 73-75f, lower end at night.

I have compact florescents for lighting. 3 65w 50/50s. Ive always heard that theres no such thing as too mugh lighting but im thinking thats probably where I am going wrong.

Daylight is 12 on , 12 off. I am thinking that may also be too much light?

Well... any help would be awesome. Let me know what you guys think.

Try cutting your lighting down to 8 hours a day! Temp also seem alittle on the low side! I try to keep mine 77 to 79 degrees! Good luck!

I would first test your water to see if anything is out of whack (ammonia, nitrates, etc). Then I would do a water change, wait a day, and test again. Try to figure out what might be feeding the algae growth.

the same think have you water checked cutting down lighting really does help but if not try about two or three turbo snails

Where did the sand come from?

I would stress the clean up crew....
