algea.....?

ok, i have this red carpet like algea stuff on my sand bed. you can peel it, but if you lift it to high, it breaks. and when i try to remove it, my sand sticks to it, and i dont wanna loose some of my sand. just wondering what it is, it just kinda makes my tank look nasty.
