What are the benefits of dosing kalk? Can I just do it in the topoff water? If so how much per gallon? Does anyone know if you can buy pickling lime locally?

Kalkwasser is the best supplement for our tanks. Google kalkwasser and read and read. An incomplete understanding can lead to a disaster.

I have purchased pickling lime at the HEB at 410 and the Lackland exit, cant remember the name of the street.

I live in Pflugerville and can not find it at HEB. What items does it sell with?

it is used in canning, so you might find it at a small grocer, a general store, maybe even a feed store. sometimes walmart will carry it in the summer time.

I've seen it at Walmart in Boerne, look for "Mrs Wages Pickling Lime", it was near the canning jars in the housewares section.

You can also order it online from bulkreefsupply: http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/Calcium,-Alkalinity-&-Magnesium-Kalkwasser/c1_3/index.html

Here's a good article about kalk: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-01/rhf/index.php

Anyone know of a reliable source in metro Austin area?

Was thinking about checking like Fiesta since HEB doesn't carry it. Someone told me Super Wally World had it but no one there would admit to having it anyways.

And yeah, kalk is one of the best things you can add to a reef tank in my opinion. Just make sure you don't dose it too concentrated or too fast. A good kalk mixer / dispenser plumbed in line with an auto top off works well.
