does anyone have this pump? how quiet is it? how many watts does it use?

The unit runs at max flow rate at 113 watts. If the flow rate is lower then the wattage would be slightly lower as well. At max, 113. As for quietness, I prefer blueline or coralife. Plus I believe you still have to oil these units from time to time. I havent opened a box in a while so I do know if they changed it.

Not sure on the wattage, but if you minimize vibration , they are near silent.

Been using this model for over 4 years now. Great pump that handles head pressure well, but noise is an issue. You will need a rubber pad or some kind of noise dampener.

btw, are these similar to the Gen-X pumps? are they just as good?

im looking at the Gen-X PCX40

Dr. Foster&Smith seems to think so since they replaced the Iwaki w/the Gen-X in their catalog, but I can't tell you myself. I mainly went w/Iwaki because of their reliability and reputation.

A sponge pad will work as a noise dampener, too. Just cut to size.

Pan World 50PX-X 1110gph 13' 90W 1" MPT / 1" MPT 10"x4"x5" 30RLXT
Pan World 100PX-X 1270gph 13' 130W 1" MPT / 1" MPT 10.5"x4"x5.5" 40RLXT

I have both the 50PX-X which is super quiet for a pump that pumps 1100 gph and the 100PX-X that can be heard, but it is not noisey. Very quiet compared to Little Giant. Pan World I belive makes most of the pumps on the market today, except for Iwaki. And most of them require oil. Once every couple of years when I take the pump down for cleaning, I run vinegar through it to clean and just flip it over and add oil. I have been told that Coral Life is great at service and warranty isssues.

looks like its between the panworld and gen-x now, but might be leaning towards the panworld now

this pump has to connect straight to a chiller which then is plumbed to my return for my aquarium. i think right now the way itis, the mag 9.5's flow is a lot less than 950, which is why my chiller has been taking a while to cool down the aquarium.

after headloss with a 1,100gph pump, im hoping its still in between the minimum and maximum range for flow through the chiller

the mags are just eating up a lot of electricity and i dont think theyre that great

+1 for Panworld. I have a 50PX, and a 50PX-X. Both are reliable, quiet, and low heat.

Is the mag pump used externally or internally? If you have it in your sump, when you switch to a Pan World the temperature in your tank will go down at least 2 degree's. The fact you are running it through your chiller you might have to run a pressure rated pump? Another question is will the external pump run too much water flow for your chiller to have enough time to cool the water down?

the pump will be external and i wondered that too

i imagine water running through 1-2 feet of horizontal length, then going through the chiller, then pumping 4 feet up would be an issuse?

i wanted to see how many gph the pump is pumping now, but my sump is too small. my sump would run dry after dumping 1 gallon somewhere. id otherwise have to pull it off the tank and put it somewhere with fw to figure it out

I just noticed you have a 75g, the 50 PX would be more than enough plus it is pressure rated. I had to move up to a MAg 18 when I had my 75 with 1 - 1" return. The 50PX-X will fill up 2 - 1" returns. I am not a plumber but if I was guessing your Mag 9.5 is probably pumping 400 GPH?

I've heard other people say their Gen X pumps were ok, but the two I have had were a little noisy and they ran really hot. I can't remember the model, but I ran the ones that were rated for about 1200gph and they were much stronger than a Mag12.

I've got an Iwaki 20RLXT on my 45g. It's a decent pump, but I was wanting to upgrade to something a little bit stronger.

If you have the money, go for the Pan Worlds over the Gen X for sure.

I prefer blueline or coralife.

Just as an FYI, Blueline is a panworld pump just private labeled for Champion. I believe coralife might also be private labeled panworld pumps.

Alton, im sure you're correct on that. im pretty sure thats whats going on. i have only 400gph or so running and my chiller is struggling with it

i think i made up my mind and am going with the 50 PX-X or the 100 PX-X

what do you guys think? max flow for the chiler is 1,000, but the pump is going to go through the chiller than have to pump up the aquarium for about 4 feet.

the coralife pump is a panworld as well. if you inspect it you'll find a panworld type number on it somewhere.

thanks everyone for your input! i looked at the coralife but i believe it was expensive

i went with the blueline HD 55 which is basically the panworld but renamed for Champion Lighting http://www.championlighting.com/product.php?productid=18057&cat=485&page=1

its not new, but i bought a used one for 130 shipped. the pump curve map shows that at 5 feet that the HD 55 pumps 17g per minute which is around 1020gph IIRC.

http://www.bluelineaquatics.com/products/water_pump/hd_chart.html this is the flow chart. ill probably have to throttle back.

does anyone know if itll be okay if i can reduce the output to 3/4" to hook it up to my existing plumbing?

like alton said the pan world will lower the temp. so would you still have to run the chiller? or would 2-3 degrees lower make the difference for you?

i think its just that its so hot outside and the family keeps the house at 80. with lights it increases to 83-84 without a problem

i still dont even have a canopy on the tank yet, but ill be getting that saturday, so im expecting temps to rise

ill have to find out if running the external pump will lower temps. when i had a 28g with 250w MH and 2x 24w PCs my temps were hitting 85 all day long and thats when i had an external iwaki pump. we had temps get to the 100s outside and i lost a nice superman frag since it wasnt used to the high temps, all other sps corals did fine
