View Full Version : goin' solar

we have decided to replace the metal halide lights on the tank with solar tubes. the problem with that decision is that our house is a two story house and the tank is downstairs. luckily, our master closet is directly over the tank and somewhat oversized.

the first thing to do was cut out part of the floor in the closet to look at the floor/ceiling joists (i did this a couple of days ago)

uncut

wood laminant removed
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/240/PDRM3658.jpg
floor decking removed
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/240/PDRM3660.jpg
it turns out, the joists are situated so i will be relocating the tubes about 3" to from centered.

the next thing to do was clear out all of the lighting above the tank (did this yesterday)

before

after
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/240/PDRM3662.jpg
all the stuff i took out
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/240/PDRM3663.jpg

the solar tubes arrived today, so the goal is to install the "inside the house" parts today and go up on the roof tomorrow morning before it gets hot. ill post pics of what i get done in a while.

What brand solar tube are you using?
Did you order through Home Depot?

I just bought the corner tank I've been looking for. Now I want to light it the best way for coral. What's better than natural sunlight? But the question is, do I need two 10" or one 14"?
The tank is only 100g but I need it to be done right.
Those of you that have done the solar tubes, please let me know what you think in terms of one or two tubes.
I will more than likely add some attinic lighting as well maybe some VHO's.
Any suggestions would be great. I've got a three week window to make this happen.

We have 2 of the best tanks and guys doing this; Mike and Ace. I would wait and see their results before jumping in. Give it a few weeks and will see how well it works through these 2. Who better to try it than these guys.

scott, i ordered from a place in florida called sun dome.

ok, so the t5 light rack is finished and hung, so i thought i would snap a few pics....

just the frame

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/240/PDRM3672.jpg
here it is installed, notice the solar tubes look a little different. the diffusers cut out too much light and without them, the light spread too much. so, i added a 12" extension to focus the light into the tank more. these pics were taken around 5:30, and you can see there is still a considerable amount of light coming in.

light rack in place
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/240/PDRM3673.jpg
light rack raised - can pick up one end or the other or the whole thing.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/240/PDRM3674.jpg

also planning to line the entire inside of the "canopy" with mylar once i find a suitable adhesive. this should direct any stray sun rays into the water as well.

I understand the concept of using natural light, but what will happen in the winter? Are we close enough to the correct latitudes for the corals to get enough light through the winter when the sun will be more diffuse and the days are shorter?

apedroza
Sun, 3rd Aug 2008, 12:31 AM
Even in the winter we get at leat 8 hrs a day of sun, so they should still get enought if the placement of the tubes are unobstructed.

phrog
Sun, 3rd Aug 2008, 01:23 AM
That 8 hours of sun in January is not the same as 8 hours of sun in July.

Nice Ace, I've always thought this was the best long term way to go.

There was a guy in CA about 4 years ago that build a tank abou 500g in a separate building/shed with a huge rectangle skylight. He also hung a few 400w halides for low light times.....if he fired the MH during the day you couldn't even tell they were on due to the light intensity from the sun.

I think there's plenty of sun power in the winter here. People culture in greenhouses in Northern states all year and even have to use screens in the summer to cut light amount back.

Very cool!

i have one question.....First off let me say i love it...But my question is....
when you took the defusers off for better light...what is going to keep dust out of the
tunnels? i would guess after a bit of time dust would kill the reflecting quality and keep
the light from getting all the way down to your tank. Im just wondering...i hope i didnt
sound negative, just wondering...

bryopsis :D i have had this stuff for years, managing it by pulling it occasionally. now, it is just vanishing! the most problematic areas were in the highest light areas - and they were the first to thin and then disappear.

Hats off to you two. You guys definitely keep this hobby interesting! What is the correlation to the die off, did you check the par in the tank? I know you are the man, but could that possibly be not good?

Mon, 11th Aug 2008, 08:20 AM
so far so good, all bryopsis has gone away. some corals have browned a bit (expected that at first), hopefully they will color back up.... at least none have bleached :D

Wow. So this MIGHT be a solution for bryopsis too? Wonder if it could be related to the light spectrum?

That's what I was thinking. Got any PAR measurements for us yet?

Man, I've been off of here for a while and this is just stunning. So are you running the solar tube through the closet and out the attic the full height of the house then. Curious because although I can't do anything like this now I though once we finally decide to move down the road and into a single story I'd like to try. If that is the case I wonder how much more (if any) light would be brought in with less distance to run?

BTW, outstanding job as usual. Really interested in the overall coloration you end up with.

CPS BILL TIME :D

last month - $592

this month - $419

- not all due to solar tubes tho, we also eliminated the 180 gallon tank which had a 250 watt external pump and 480 watts of T5.

thats pretty amazing! i would have thought that natural sunlight would have "yellowed" out the entire tank making corals look brown even with the use of actinics but that doesnt seem to be the case at all! everything looks great! i own a single story house and will be putting a little 75g in my livingroom wall here in about a year from now. after witnessing what you've done i might just have to give it a go with the solar tubes? you do plan on keeping up with progressive information for the next year right? ;) i really like the idea of saving a buck by using a natural resource like the sun to light my tank. are you going to do any PAR measurments or did i miss that part? i only kind of skimmed through the thread. ide really like to see how the tubes read PAR-wise in comparison to MHs. i really want to say that the PAR will better with sunlight obviously, but after the traveling through the tube and penetrating the water you never know?

cant wait to follow along with furhur progess, and keep up the inspiring work!

So far I have two large T. squamosa – one is about 7” and the other is about 11”

ok, small update. i lost a few colonies over the last month, not certain why. could be all the changes over the last two months: kalk reactor issue followed by calcium reactor issue, change in lighting, tear down to catch sps munching damsels

all of the corals that are still with us are doing great....

here are a few comparison pics (the ones that are missing here are mostly because i had a hard time taking pics today - i did lose the large blue slimer, paletta lovelli, uf best stag ever and the A. florida tho :( )

you will notice a different orientation in the pics - that is because the tank was rearranged when reassembling after catching the damsels

i had been AEFW free for nealy two years...... until this morning.

i found eggs on the bottom of two large colonies and on a third colony, one large (1/4") worm. i took all three of them out and dipped them, but found no other flat worms  i thought my fluke tabs may be too old, so i even took a large chunk of one of the colonies with eggs and put it in tap water - no flatworms came off :confused:

i will not be tearing the tank down to dip and quaranteen like i did the first time. instead, i will get some AEFW hunting wrasses to keep them under control.

Man that's sucks Ace, have you ever try to treat the whole tank with Flatworm Exit before? I"ve read in Reef Magazine that you have to keep blowing with turkey baster if you plan to use fishes to eat them. Good luck.

That is a whole different type of flatworm. that stuff will not work on AEFW

Thanks Mike , I thought that stuff would work on all flatworms.

man that is hard to type. I think your probably doing the correct method to bear with them. What type of wrasses are you getting?

yellow coris, radiant, leopard, mystery (maybe), and a candy hogfish. as well as any other that i find i really like. may also do a pair of clowns at some point.

i have lots of room for fish after removing all those damsels, the halequin tusk, lunare wrasse, large gsm clown, and three pj cardinals.

ok, since i have a few sps again, i thought i would start the comparison pics weekly (for now)

all of these were added the same day except the bnest. it was in the tank about a week before i started taking pics. i think the first pics were taken on a cloudy day, so the color differences may not be as drastic as the photos show, but there has been some change already :)

this week's pics. notice how difficult it is to take consistent pics with a sunlit tank...

the last couple of days were very sunny in the middle of the day, i think the birdsnest and the new mille from jimd were a little overwhelmed - notice the buned tips on the mille and the faded color on the bnest. hopefully they will be ok.
