View Full Version : sedra pump out?

I noticed today that my asm g2 skimmer was no working. I took the pump off and cleaned it up as much as possible. The impeller does not seem to be broken. When I plug it in I get nothing. Usually when I worked on pumps they at least vibrated or made a hum that let me know they should be working. This pump is dead silent. Does it sound like a goner to you all? I am assuming you can't open it up since it appears to be sealed.

Sorry to hear it Jacob.. I posted on this exact issue recently when the sedra on my euroreef skimmer went out. There were suggestions that the impeller might have swelled and wouldn't spin, but the actual pump was doing SQUAT. So short of opening it up, I bent over and ordered another one. At least now I have a spare impeller...

What size Sedra is it?

3500. I went ahead and ordered the 5000 as a replacement. The g2 was for a fowlr tank and I switched it over to my reef. Everyone agrees that it is underpowered for a 180 reef tank. Rather than buy a new skimmer I will do the same mesh mod to the 5000 and call it a day. The 3500 worked well enough until it didn't.

You won't be disappointed w/the upgrade. Just did the same w/my Euroreef and stepped up to the 5000.
I still have a working 3500 if you need to use one in the meantime. Just send me a pm if you want to borrow it.

My skimmer is overflowing. When I compared the water in the collection cup to the water in the tank it was the same color. The only thing I did to the sedra 5009 before I installed it was to widen the venturi. The empty cup fills up in just a few minutes. Do I have to replace the pump with the original 3500? Can I adjust the pump somehow? I have read of people do this type of change with the pumps, however I have not found anyone who had the problem with overflowing skimmers.

Does your G2 have a gate valve? Does it have an air adjustment? Either of these could cause it to overflow if not adjusted correctly. BTW, if it does not have a gate valve, I highly recommend that mod. Makes it much easier to adjust.

I think I figured it out. While my pump was on order I went ahead and dosed some chemiclean to kill the cyano. I think that is the cause of the overflow. People say it makes the skimmer go crazy. I put some carbon back in the tank and tomorrow I will start the skimmer up again.

Had the same problem w/a similar pump upgrade on an old euroreef cs6-2 w/riser tube adjustment.
But, on the gate valve mod. subject. Got a good diy recomendation or link on the mod? Do you need to go to a plumb. supply store or will HD or Lowes have the material?

I did not find the gate valve at HD or Lowe's. You may have to order online. Here is a link to the same mod on an ASM. Works the same way. HTH.

Everything is running fine now. The carbon pulled most of the meds out and the skimmer went back to normal. The sedra 5000 is working great. I am going to try to make the gate valve. I tried it once with the asmskimmer.com package but it didn't fit in my sump. I am going to try to modify it to fit in my sump and use a ball valve. If it works I am switching to the gate valve. I also might try the mesh mod since I have left over enkamat.
