for about 2 weeks there has been a outbreak of red stringy algea all over my tank, smothering my corals, and making them all close up. i looked it up on the internet, and turns out i have red slime...GREAT. so i spent an arm and leg for this TINY bottle of -CHEMICLEAN-, which is suppost to be the best. has anyone used this be4? i put the right dosage in, and waited for 48 hours liek it said. and i still have it. i suck it off with a tube, but FIVE MINUITS LATER its right back!??!?!?!! what the heck?

do ya'll know anything else i can try..?

my tank looks bad with all of its corals closed and red slime everywhere...

The main contributor is nutrients in the water.
Is your clean up crew adequate? Plenty of snails?
Check the TDS of the RO/DI water, and test for phosphates.
You could run phosban in a filter sock, should be slow enough flow in the back area ( the fuge area )

it typically takes two treatments to erradicate it for me

dose 1 day, wait 1 day, dose again the next day

dont bother testing for phosphates

i have a 30, i treat on day 1, do nothing on day 2, treat again on day 3, water change on day 4. i treat exactly how many scoops it says to for a 30. this has always worked for me. ymmv!

increase flow decrease feeding and use chemiclean at your own risk. I've heard of and seen some pretty terrible results using that chemical.

Cheers,

Kurt

Why shouldn't he test for phosphate? Like Scorpino, I'd suspect a nutrient problem caused by NO3 and/or phosphates. You can treat the problem, but you'll get better long term results fixing the underlying source. I'd check your RO h2o (that was my problem when I had a red slime outbreak) and keep syphoning that stuff off.

increasing the flow will help out a lot and do a few water changes and of course siphon out as much as possible

Hi,

As mentioned, this is mainly a nutrient build-up issue. Effective skimming, less feeding and good overall flow throughout the tank and across the sandbed can help rectify this naturally. If you understand, find and eliminate the root cause.... your tank will be better served than by dumping in chemical's when a problem arise imo.

I agree.

Something else that works wonders is ozone. I ran it in my skimmer with excellent results. Also using kalk for your top off water will help too
