What's the best way to frag Palys?
I got a small frag a couple of years ago and the polyps spread to a large piece of LR. I moved the frag to another spot in the tank, and they spread to that rock, too. Long story short: I've got these teal palys everywhere. And, they're starting to take over some of my mushroom colonies.
I know I can break some of the smaller pieced of LR where they are attached, but I don't want to break up the large piece. Any help would be appreciated.
BTW, I'll be selling some in the near future. Should be plenty.

take out the rock they are on to a small container of tank water and with a razor knife cut/scrape them off at the base and super glue them to rubble.

When fragging palys and zoanthids.....make sure you wear latex gloves. Be careful of the palytoxins these corals may release and wash hands thoroughly right after your done.

i wonder where those palys came from :D if you will take some bone cutters or a cheap pair of dikes and cut the surface of the rock where they are growing, the outside layer should break off with the palys attached to it, then you or someone else can just glue em to another rock. as mentioned, be careful with those toxins, they make you feel pretty bad for several hours.

Yea, they came from you, Ace.
Can they be cut while in the tank? The one main colony is on a pretty big rock. And, that rock supports some others. If I take it out, I'll end up moving ALL the rock around. (And, I really don't want to do that.)

i dont see why not, just make sure you are running carbon to filter out anything (toxin) they release when you stress em.

Ace, you're KILLIN' me. :at_wits_end: (lol!) There's a caveat to everything, huh?!?
Leave the rock in the tank and I get toxins released. Take it out, and it's a real PITA.
I guess I have the time to take the rock out and just re-aquascape if I have to. Probably better idea in the long run anyway, huh?
Thanks for the help! I'll let y'all know when I have frags available. (BTW, how long will they need to "heal" after fragging this way?)

When this thread turns into a sale thread, put me in line for a frag.

actually, you will need to run carbon even if you frag them outside of the tank bc they will be stressed from having them out of the water and could release toxins in to the water after you put em back in.....

I frag mine in tank, never seem to have a problem with them. Glue them on or put in rock rubble pile and let attach on own. I always run carbon though so maybe that is why.

I fragged a bunch today. I wound up breaking up some of the rock, as well as cutting the top layer of rock off w/ the polyps attached. I think it worked pretty well. I'll post pics in the For Sale Forum when they open up a bit.
(BTW, I ended up re-scaping anyway! It doesn't look a whole lot different. I just can't help myself.)
