View Full Version : Cyclopeeze for SPS?

I'm feeding the tank sugarcube sized bits of cyclopeeze once a day (in addition to frozen foods for the fish 2x day). I'm about to start feeding phyto 2 or 3 times a week for new SPS frags. Does this make sense, or should I back off on the cyclo? If cyclo is good for sps, should I only feed phyto twice a week? Any and all input appreciated. Thanks!

i believe cyclopeez and phyto are not small enough. you could try DTs oyster eggs

Phyto is small enough, eg phytoplankton. phytoplankton adds omega 3 fatty acids to the micro feeding cycle.

I feed a cube cyclops once a week. Feeding diversity is one of the keys to maintaining the health of our reef inhabitants.

i thought they ate zooplankton (meaty foods, oyster eggs) over phytoplankton (plant-like food, phyto). like the phytoplankton gives zooplankton a food source which would allow zooplankton to grow

I thought phyto was for sps, and zoo more for LPS and softies. My softies love cyclo. Was just trying to figure out if SPS likes cyclo too..

Ruben, your statement, "i believe cyclopeez and phyto are not small enough" is incorrect. The polyps of coral will consume items the nematocysts fire on, and are small enough to consume. Motile types of phytoplankton meet these criteria. The non- motile phytoplankton that is not removed by the skimmer will be consumed by the bacteria and zoo plankton in the marine aquarium system, and both the bacteria and plankton are part of the micro feeding cycle.

Dominican, continue with what you are doing, SPS do consume some of the cyclopeeze and some of the phytoplankton. A reef system is just that, a system, and we feed the system while attemmting to maintain a balance with nutrient export. Just be careful not to overload your system with too much food.

OK ping sorry, im going by what Wet Web Media says. if you say that cyclopeez is small enough then okay.

Thanks Ping!! I'm going to try Mon/Wed-Phyto, and Fri-Cyclo. Thanks for your input too Ruben - all exchanges are appreciated. This is how we learn!! MAAST is a great board. :)
