I was at Kona Grill having dinner last night, and my wife, baby, and I were admiring their large tank. We really liked the school of lookdowns in there, and I was wondering if anyone has had them in a reef tank? I understand they have a tendancy to eat smaller fish, but won't touch coral, and they grow very slowly. When looking at them online they seem to sell them pretty small and they are ok for tanks 100gallons +.

I have heard they are a Hard species to keep, and arent they expensive? Like $100+each.... They are schooling fish so they do better in 3+ of them so you need at least a 150-200g. Thats what I got from many people when talking about wanting them myself. I really like those fish, and they are the main reason I want to upgrade later down the road...

I have 2 of these in 250 bow and they love to watch TV. They are about 10 inches or so and they will both stare at the TV when it is on. They do have a large appetite and will eat anything that falls in the tank. They are very fast swimmers and have incredible bursts of speed. I have them in this tank because it has no rock and only a couple inches of fine sand in the bottom. I think that they might damage themselves in a tank with liverock the way they zoom around.

Y'all might catch some when you come to Port Aransas next month. Over the past 3 years I've caught about 8 juveniles, merely by chance of course. The chance to catch one is just another reason to come down to the 4th Annual Big Bird Port Aransas Collection Trip. :wink_smile:

This is the only Lookdown I ever took home. I used to think they were very delicate. So he lived by himself in my Nano Cube DX 24g. It only took about in 6 months before I felt that he out grew the tank, so I returned him (acclimated correctly) to the Gulf where Garrett (addboy) caught him last year during the 3rd Annual Big Bird Port Aransas Collection Trip. :thumbs_up:
