WOW, terribly sorry to hear of this, I know you have been through so much already fighting with this problem.

Looks like I have lost a couple but most are ok.. several more sps on the way out and i'm sad to say almost all will be lost before its over. I lost my frogspawn but all other lps types seem to have weathered the storm, the tank hit 95 before I was able to cool it

That is just sickening. I was hoping your losses would be minimal. Well, You know I'll have some frags for you when youre ready.

Thanks Sean... it's the two years worth of growth that hurts the most

Whoa.... I think you might need a light shut off controller. The Reef Keeper 2 or an Aqua Controller Jr. will "Kill the lights" in succession when the temperature gets to your predefined temperature(s). Then again, I have yet to see your set up so I might be totally off on my suggestions.
Sorry, this happened to you, Mike. I know how you feel right now.
I'm not that worried on the Chalice. I'm sure that it's in good hands with Ace. But then again, sometimes poo happens.

Ouch!! Hope the losses taper off. What type of chiller failed?
Texreefer
Mon, 23rd Jun 2008, 07:50 PM
it was my second tradwinds chiller.. the room is fan cooled and rarely gets over 90

Mike I know this tank is bigger but you kept most of your old equipment. What is causing such high temp that differs from the last setup? Cant imagine how you feel after putting in so much work and the years you have had some of those corals.

Hate to see this, sorry. I followed the build thread previously and the recent updates.
I know you would have done things differently, if you would have known. All we can do is proceed to the best of our ability and knowledge. I know you have done that. But, such a painful experience nonetheless.

OH MY... This is very alarming to read this. I have had my share of tragedy, which resulted in the lost of a few colonies... but not to this extreme.
I hope you plan to contact the vendor and express your concerns on product quality and reliability.

Wow, Mike, that is depressing, I'm so sorry, those colonies are huge and I know it took alot of time and effort to grow them that large. Many reefers have gone through this, you just have to keep going and push through it. It will be worth it in the end.

Mike,
I feel really bad about this, since I hooked you up with Tradewinds. What in the world is going on, that a second chiller failed? Knock on wood, mine's been great. Not that you wanted to hear that...
I've got plenty that I can frag for you, once things are up and going again. I'd echo the "turn off MH if water gets too warm" controller. Mine has a piercing alarm if the water hits 82. When we're not here, I keep the doors open JUST IN CASE, so my old fan system stilll kicks on.

Not sure if turning MH off automatically above certain temperature will help much in a room that gets to be 90. That situation is very dependant on chillers.
If committed to continuing in that set-up and not moving it (fully) back into house, then perhaps two chillers in sequence would be advisable. Just a thought.

Sorry to hear. This happened to me about 1 1/2 months ago. I have a 175 bow front. Lost 4 fish, 90% of my coral, shrimps, etc. Still sad about the whole thing. I'm sure you'll rebuild.

Sorry to see this Mike the tank is great in-person, I am sure you can bounce back in no time, but it sucks to lose that long in growth.

Ok Third time is a charm.. Check out this Beast! It is an ocean cool and this thing is built heavy duty inside and out.. Very Very Very happy with it so far,,Everything on the inside is insulated including the heat exchanger. has a removable air filter and integrated controls with large digital readout.

Hey Mike,
Did you ever find out what the reason was for the other chillers crapping out? I have only heard great things about the Tradewinds. I was considering replacing the two Prime tower chillers that we had on our tanks with the Tradewinds until Mike Connor told me about your thread. In our case the reason for our chillers going out was the 90 degree ambient heat.
Texreefer

it would be the same reason,,, tradewinds are probably very good chillers if you buy one much larger than you need,,, IMO, and with two failing, i'm somewhat of an expert on this, they are way underbuilt,, they are use a BTU rating for the chiller but use minimal material elsewhere, I believe the heat exchanger is undersized.. and on and on,, but i'm am somewhat biased in my experience. Comparing the Tradwinds to the Ocean Cool I just bought, there is no contest in quality and design

sorry to hear about your loss, I had a similar problem a couple months back, the AC in my apartment went out and the halides cooked my tank. Good luck rebuilding and hopefully your new chiller doesn't give you any trouble.
