Anybody seen these?

I was looking on RC for a thread, but no luck. I have only found info on the Solaris system, but not anything like this. Any comments or experience? To bad they are so expensive.

Remember reading something a few years back about them being developed. Didn't know they actually have a production model. Who's got $1000 and wants to be the Maast guinea pig on these?

You can try making your own:

540 lumens on a chip.
I use their LEDs for the boat.

250 MH lamp cost around $80 a year to run. The LED lamp would never pay for itself.

LED's are getting closer to a reality for me. The only reason I have not purchased a Solaris is the fear a a better cheaper unit coming on the market soon after my purchase.
Heat is a major issue to me and a large factor in a cost benefit analysis.

The problem with these LEDs is that NO ONE has been able to show SPS growth/color with them. Solaris' website shows the SAME old pictures they've had for a year.

You are now up to 4 different LED fixture makers, plus one DIY kit. It is the future, until Plasma light which I have seen, and its bright.

One of the speakers at MACNA last year had a tank running the 250 Solaris. His talk was about growing colorful Acro's. He talked about running bright lights and having very low nutrients to prevent browning or if your tank has higher nutrients running less lighting to prevent browning. His corals were beautiful and at the end of the presentation he said he was running the Solaris 250.

Aquarium Designs is running one over one of the coral tanks and I was told that they have good results granted the corals dont stay to long.

We are working on a sponsorship with the company that makes these. Thanks, Drew. We should be getting one of the lights soon for a raffle item. WoooHooo! Man, can you imagine...No ballast needed.

Yeah It should be interesting to see what these lights can really do and what better way to test it!

Well as promised, I have been playing with these a bit and took some pix today over a 37g Oceanic Cube.
More than enough spread, on my 6' frag tank it covers almost half. Still (as with halides) a bulb for every 2ft of tank.
I am still waiting on the PAR numbers from Tullio and the kelvin plot. To me, and my eyes I would call it a warm 10k and with actinic it looks much better. Over all I am satisfied with the color, brightness, and spread as compared to a 175-250w MH lamp.
My photos and comment can be found here...

I think we are missing a key point. To run a 40w bulb instead of a 250w bulb will save a bunch on electric.I would love to spend 1/5 of what i will be spending on running 5 250w MH's.Plus to have the bulb even last 5 years instead of 1 year pays for the bulb alone.

Why not just use 3 - 400 watt bulbs:lightbulb::lightbulb::lightbulb:??? .... Oh yeah, they still have to be replaced every 12 -18 months.
I wonder what the yearly operating cost is per LED Bulb running 8 hours a day?

Calculator:
http://www.reefcentral.com/calc/tank_elec_calc.php
Well if its only 40w (with no ballast to worry about) and you run it 8hours a day with a average of $.12 per KWH it comes to:
9.73 KWH/Month costing you $1.17 a month
a year's usage...roughly $14.04??

I tried to be realistic and come up with some kind of cost differential....
Let's see:
Now this is just "rough" math but here goes...
3 decent MH bulbs @ $65 = $195 X 3 yrs = $585
1 yr of 3 ballasts eating elec. ($100 mo.) x 3 yrs = $3600
1 yr of chiller running/eating elec. ($50 mo.) x 3 yrs = $1800
TOTAL $5985 for 3 yrs
These use no ballast, just a cord and mogul socket, so...
$500 ea. x 3 = $1500...good for 3 yrs
$1500 for 3 yrs don't sound so bad.

Man, you would not believe the difference with the bulb that Coral dynamics makes and the original one by Tullio. Sean got some pix at MACNA that we will post soon.
