Does anyone else keep their r/o system outside? I was told that it will cause damage to the plastic parts. Aside from the tubing getting brittle I have algae growing in the carbon chamber. I don't want it inside because I sometimes forget the water is running and my collection bucket overflows. Where do you all keep yours?

Yeah, I would imagine the sun and heat would get some algae and bacteria growing inside it sitting outside. I keep mine in the laundry room and keep the light on so I don't forget about it when I have it running.

use a overflow shut off valve

I use 5 gallon jugs to refill the tank. I don't know how I could put a valve on a jug. I think I would need a trash can size container to use a valve. I like to use the small jugs because it makes it easier to carry the water to my tank.
I was thinking about making a cover for the r/o system. Maybe something like a canvas bag that would keep the heat and light off of it.

you can use a trash can with a s/o valve to fill your bucket. You can storage more with a trash can.

Yeah, I would go with using a storage container of some sort with the float valve on it and then transferring water to your buckets when you need to top off your tank. That's what I used to do with my first RO/DI setup. I had the unit fill a 50g rubbermaid tub that I had elevated about 3 feet off the ground. The tub had a bulkhead at the bottom with a valve and hose that I used to fill a 5g bucket to top off my sump as needed. The storage tub just had a simple Kent float valve that turned the RO/DI on/off and I never had any problems. That way you also always have fresh water ready to go, you don't have to wait for it.

You could get a little Rubbermaid garden tool box/shed. Set some pavers down by a garden hose and then run the water line into the box/shed. This will keep it nice and neat. From there, you can see if your 5g container will fit in the box/shed for filling and storage. Or you can incorporate a water storage container somewhere as well.

We're talking about getting one but it will go in the garage that way when I forget to turn the water off and over flow the trash can its not a huge deal.

Mine sits on the patio under the cover. It sits inside an old 55 gallon aquarium stand. It is protected from the sun and the freezing weather. It has been there for 3 yrs now without a problem. Oh I run the water in a gallon plastic barrel using a Kent shut off valve. $15.00 AD .

The barrel has a plastic faucet at the bootom and was used to hold flavored syrup. I will get a picture this evening.

Just remember that water temperature affects the RO process...
