well,, the new chiller i bought was too small for my heat load, the new chiller i bought to replace the new chiller I just bought will still take a week to get here,, I have two colonies gone and three more on the way out,,, Desalwii, chips, ORA roscoe, and others,, nothing I can do,, I would need a 60 #block of ice every day just to make a difference,, sad to see such nice corals suffering

my swing is going from 79 to 82 daily but he problem is I have some sensitive corals and they have had constantly stable for almost two years so this is new to them.. my birdsnest is doing fine right now and next to brians, its one of the biggest I have seen.. so i hope to hold onto it

I bought a $700 tradewinds 1/4 hp chiller and the temp NEVER got warm enough in my house to get it to come on. I keep my thermostat between 76 and 78 and mt tank stays at around 75. I finally just took it out and it's boxed back up. Of course I only have 3 150w HQIs and 4 96w pc's too. Try turning down the heat in your house and running your MH's a little less til your new chiller gets there.

Wow, Mike, my temps before chiller would go from 77 to 83 or 84 every day. No REAL problems. Corals are usually pretty good about tolerating those swings. Can't run fans to cool it off better? Ice MIGHT be a good solution - just freeze milk jugs or 3 liter bottles in your freezer, and cycle them back and forth.
How big was your chiller, and how big is your tank? Wasn't it a 1/2 hp? I can't believe you need something bigger...

For that matter you could come get mine too if it will help, it's a 1/4hp drop in chiller. Long drive though.

Maybe rent a small port-a-cool machine to put in your fish room until the chiller comes in? I assume someone rents them.

Thanks for all the offers and suggestions guys,, I'm exploring all my options right now,, Bill I just have an extreemly high heat load on my tank. I have a total of 9 pumps adding heat plus the 800watts of lighting and then it being in the room in that garage,, I have fans and exhaust on the room plus the airconditioner that did a good job today but my bill i'm sure will be over $500 this month. The chiller will run for 10 hours at a time with no cooldown,, that is a 1/2 hp i'm going to a large 3/4 hp.. I don't think it is the current temp swing causing the trouble but the initial one.. I also may have some other issues that i'm looking into so hopefully i will get things back on track soon

My wife says our electric bill has gotten better with the chiller...
Where is (was) your chiller, in the garage, or outside? If outside, you might want to make sure it's shaded AND put a fan out there.
BTW, mine's be struggling the last few days. High humidity AND high temps.

its outside and in the shade.. I put a fan on it a couple of days ago and it didn't seem to help

My tank is 81.9 this morning with all the lights off- except fuge light-. I have a little giant running and a rio pump for the skimmer. I just opened the canopy and will add a fan to the fuge.
Is there anywhere you can place your corals, until you figure this out? I would offer mine, but obviously I have the same problem you do. Good luck!

What are the actual temps now? I don't see how 82ish can nuke anything. Must be getting much hotter.

Not that this will help you in your current situation, but is your garage door insulated? A friend of mine got new doors that are insulated (a good 2 inches or so thick) and there is weather stripping all the way around so when the doors are closed the garage actually stays much cooler.

It was the initial spike of high temp after being so stable for two years. If your corals are used to a small swing and Higher temps then you won't see a problem.
Now to the latest issue, while dealing with the heat issue I didn't know that my alk was spiking at 12.5 dkh and at the same time all teh co2 out of my 40# bottle was leaking into the fish room..:at_wits_end: High alk+high heat+lots of co2 released into air = nuked corals,,, most tips are fried. some corals are gonners. large birdsnest started to STN. it is now a small birdsnest.. lots of work later and now just waiting to see if i fixed it soon enough

Mike,
Thinking over your dilemma, what do you think about painting the cover white?

Ok, the heat issue has long been settled thanks to Hal at Tradewinds. the bad news is many corals still slowly going down hill, my nice green table is looking bad, along with my large green slimmer, blue tip tenuis, my thin green stag and 3 others.. I think it is just the combination of lighting changes, alk issues, heat issues, and the tank move. hopefully things will settle before too long.

Mike - I've been having some problems with my tank lately and lost many of the coral frags I had. Because of that I'm moving away from keeping corals with this setup for now. I have two frags left from the bunch that I got from you awhile back so I would be more than happy to return them to you if your tank has stabilized. I can't remember exactly which ones they are, but they might be ones that you mentioned.
