Taking of peppermint shrimp on jetties ILLEGAL???

On our 3 day sail from Galveston Bay to Corpus Christi, a buddy of mine who was helping us move were discussing shrimping. I happened to have a copy of the Outdoor Journal onboard, and we found this regulation:

"Shrimping is not permitted within any natural or man-made pass leading from the inside waters to the outside waters of the state."

To me, this specifically includes the inlet inside of the jetties at Port A.

So you make sure you are on the beach side of the jetty and not the pass side. Problem solved.

"Shrimping" is a term that's probably defined in your friends Outdoor Journal and most likely refers to large scale or commercial catching of shrimp.

Collecting shrimp is legal in the state of Texas with a license, Chapter 77 (http://www.suspect.com/laws/Texas-Laws/parks/chapter77.html) of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Code details the regulations.

Also read the definition of "Shrimp" in the outdoor manual It does not include peppermint therefore it falls under a bait collection for personal use.

No, "shrimping" does not refer to large scale operations - it refers to "A person taking or attempting to take shrimp...".

Nowhere does it DEFINE the actual species of shrimp. A shrimp is a shrimp. Your link provides just a list of docs. Here's the Recreational Shrimp Regulations:

My bad I thought I had looked at that before.... I also talked to Chuck Ford this morning, He is a freind of my Uncles and is also the game warden for Port A, and he said that as long as you are not using a cast net, seine, or Trawl ( as long as we are using Nets scooping them out of the rocks) We are within the law to do it from either side of the jetties, I got really worried about this as I am going down there next week and wanted to get some myself, He Said the reason it is like that is because before that was written some people would go out there as the tide was heading out or in and put out a net to scoop everything moving in the main water in. Interesting. During spring break I was at the state aquarium in Corpus and watched a shrimp boat pull it's net through the water before exiting the harbor.

That's OK. Most of the spots are on the beach side of the jetties (16 Spots) anyway. I only know of 4 spots on the channel side that have a good amount of peppermint shrimp.

We usually go thru this every year before the BB PA Trip and as long as you are not collecting these for re-sale, we are OK...and you have a SW fishing license.

CC Bay is different - it's not an inlet.

Collecting for resale is part of the regs. However, those are separate from the regs on WHERE and WHEN you can collect. I also noticed that after July 15th, one can't shrimp after dark.
