View Full Version : Chiller questions

Everything was going well on my office tank reef build, until I realized that the a/c is turned off on Sundays. Needless to say, it will get too warm to keep stuff alive over the weekend. Therefore, I'm getting a chiller. I'm trying to figure out a way to run both the chiller and phosban reactor off of one pump to keep tank heat to a minimum. Total tank volume is around 40 gallons.

First question: What chiller? I'm leaning to the 1/10 current prime chiller, as it appears it will be the right size for my tank. Any thoughts on these chillers?

Second question: How to link the chiller and phosban reactor together? The dilemma is that the chiller requires 300-600 gph, and the phosban reactor requires 80 gph or lower. Here's what I'm thinking: Maxijet 400 pump --> 1/2" ID tubing-->chiller-->5/8" id tubing-->5/8" to 1/2" reducer-->1/2" tee--> 1/2" ball valve--> i/2 id tubing-->phosban reactor. The tee will be used to divert some of the flow back into the sump, and letting the rest go to the phosban reactor. Any reasons why this wouldn't work? On paper, it appears that it would.

Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

you could just get a drop in chiller to save on the extra plumbing/pump.

You could TEE into the line after the pump and put a valve to regulate the flow.

I looked at drop-in chillers, but most of them are too big for what I need. If anyone makes a 1/10 hp drop-in, let me know.

I used a 1/10th Pacific Coast chiller in the past. Worked really good. With that amount of water it should be able to keep up. What type of lighting are you using? You can always throttle back the amount of light with a timer on Sundays to prevent the tank from getting hotter as well.

You could TEE into the line after the pump and put a valve to regulate the flow.

This is your best bet. Use a tee after the exit of whatever pump you will feed the chiller with. Place a ball valve on the side that will feed the phosban reactor. This will regulate the flow to your reactor. You do not want a lot of flow through the reactor but you will for the chiller.

This is what I intend on doing, just got the order wrong.

Yes, I will throttle back the lights on the weekends. The light is a 250w mh pendant.
